Bosch Combi HBC84E653B microwave – Loud Sparking noise

Hello All!

I own a Bosch Combi HBC84E653B microwave that is equipped with a Magnetron model 2M236-M42. Unfortunately, I’ve been experiencing a recurring issue where the microwave occasionally produces a loud sparking noise while in use. Recently, the microwave function completely stopped working after one of these loud sparking incidents. Although the oven appears to be functioning, it no longer heats up the food.

To troubleshoot the problem, I removed the oven, opened the back cover, and disconnected and reconnected the magnetron. Surprisingly, the microwave started working again, but the sparking noise issue persisted. I’m now considering if the magnetron itself is faulty and if replacing it would resolve the problem.

Can you provide any insights or suggestions regarding the fault and the potential need to replace the magnetron? Your expertise would be greatly appreciated.

its difficult to say although the mag does sound suspect

one thing to beware of it 5000V DC on the mag. This can be there even if the unit is switched off so you need to discharge the wires before touching anything

Thanks, Dave! I removed the magnetron from the oven. Upon inspection, I noticed that the tip of the magnetron is burned. I’m curious to know what could have caused this burning and if it’s worth considering repairing the oven at this point.

quite often caused by contamination and not cleaning the waveguide cover

you can get a used mag for about £25 amd a new one for £46 off ebay

chances are it will be ok once you have changed it but you want know till you do

I’ve decided to go ahead and install a new magnetron and take my chances. However, I’m a bit confused about the specific model I should be looking for. The magnetron that came out of the oven is labeled as 2M236-M42 (J15-0519 0 1YC), but according to the BOSCH website, it should be 2M236-M42J1Y (Typ 2M236-M1G = spare part 641612). Now, when searching online, I’m coming across different numbers for the 2M236-M42 magnetron ( J9N-1106 0 P7 ). I’m unsure which one is the correct version I need to source. Any guidance or clarification on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

this will be a gen panasonic part and the microwave you have uses panasonic works

Cheers – I went ahead and ordered the magnetron from the eBay listing you mentioned. Now, I’m hoping that it successfully fixes the issue with my oven. Fingers crossed!

Another reason for the magnetron failing could be using full power to heat up everything as full power on these microwaves are on for heating liquid

Sparking in the waveguide and damage to the magnatrons antenna is usually caused by a carbonizing waveguide cover, its a must to replace the waveguide cover before powering up the new magnatron, a word of warning though if your buying off the internet, inspect your new magnatron very carefully , I have seen old secondhand magnatrons cleaned up and re painted with silver paint to make them look like new ones again .
