ParticipantWe have a Bosch SGS45E62GB dish washer.
It runs through the cycle perfectly and cleans all of the dishes as expected.
Recently it has developed a whine noise (probably between 5 and 8Khz) and this whine noise runs throughout the cycle aside from the occasional temporary stop when I think it is flushing water out of the waste pipe. The whine only stops for a few seconds and then starts up again.
I cannot be 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} sure but it seems to be coming from the base of the machine on the right hand side below the door.
For a while we put up with the noise but recently it has gone through the irritating phase and is starting to induce headaches !
I don;t think that it is rubbing the cabinets even though there isn’t much clearance. TBH, if it were I would expect more of a rumble.
Any suggestions as to the cause would be very much appreciated.
Many thanks in advance.

sounds like a main pump motor problem
you would have to strip it and run it with sides off to be certain
or get proffessional helpDave

Thanks Dave,
Any idea where I can get an exploded view of the dish washer?
I’m also confused regarding the job the pump does vs the job the motor does. The pump is obvious but I would assume that the rotors are turned by water flow. So, what does the motor do in this appliance? I hope that this isn’t a daft question.
The pump is a much cheaper unit to replace. If the motor is gone and with the age of the dishwasher (at least 5 years) I wonder if I am better off buying another one! ?
Any thoughts?
thanks again.

just to clarify you problem
this dishwasher has 2 pumps
pump 1 is the drain pump to get rid of used water
pump 2 is the wash pump. this is the jet wash that clean your dishes. it is a much bigger unit than the drain pumpthe wash pump is the one i would suspect making the noise. there isw either something stuck in it rubbing on the impellor or the bearing are noisy. fault 1 is easily fixable after removing the motor. fault 2 requires a new motor athough wd40 may prolong its life for a bit

Thanks for all of your replies – they are much appreciated. I took a look at the exploded views and I contacted the people on the link provided just to see what their impression was. They said that Bosch products were designed to work for 25 to 30 years and that things shouldn’t go wrong with them. I wish I could say that our Bosch washing machine lasted for a quarter of that (it didn’t). They offered me a service contract for £14 a month for a year and said that an engineer could be on site within 2 to 3 days and that this would cover all of the costs.
If the motor is on the way out it represents reasonably good value. If the motor isn’t the culprit then it probably doesn’t. If the machine has plenty of useful life left in it then it probably is worth getting it fixed.
I cannot believe that these things really last 25 years – a bit of marketing speak there, I think! In your experience, typically, how long do these types of dish washers normally run before they start to cost a lot to maintain through wear and tear?
thanks again.

the term last for 20 years is generally considered as the lifespan of the machine, this doesnt mean it would be 20 trouble free years… its based more on how long parts are available for. £14 a month is £168. dont think they will let you cancel it after 1 month, as i think its for a 12mth contract. but as you said its still cheaper than £140 for a motor plus bosch callout… thats fine as long as its not a 24mth contract 😉

Yes, their words were that I could take out a 12 month contract and the engineer would come on site. He would review the machine and if he felt that it wasn’t worth repairing he would say and the company would cancel the contract. Otherwise the contract would run for the year and the machine would be repaired as and when necessary within the year.
I’m not a great fan of buying breakdown insurance for the sake of it. However, given that the machine is 6 years old (the FD number was checked)and something isn’t right it could be at a point where it would benefit from a good looking over and probably still has a few years of life left. If its a bit of muck fouling up the system then I am out of pocket. If the motor is on the way out and is replaced and the machine checked over and (in effect) given a clean bill of health, £14 a month for a year with no labour or parts to pay for seems like pretty decent value. I can then review the situation when the contract expires and decide if I want to keep it running or not.
We’ve arranged for the contract to start and for an engineer to come out next week.

The most likely cause is the circulating motor seal leaking and this has allowed water into the motor bearings causing corrosion to build up . The noise will have gradually got worse , from a higher pitched whining to an almost grinding noise . The best fix is a replacement of motor and sealing kit . If you paid for the call out and parts as a one off payment from BSH , you’d be looking at a bill of approx £250 so the repaircare policy ( or repair+1 as it was ) could be a good choice especially as you then have another 12 months cover afterwards……although this doesn’t include accidental damage , only mechanical and electrical breakdown.

I must admit to feeling a lot happier this evening. Time will tell if it is the seal and bearings but my gut feeling is that the problem must be pump related simply because the noise is evident for much of the cycle. The moving part of a motor is the rotor and this, generally is held in with a bearing.
In machines bearing failure is a given at some stage unless the part is over engineered. I hadn’t appreciated that a water leak could be the cause of the failure but the symptoms suggested do make sense. The once very quiet machine has gradually become noisier over the past weeks and months. The sound is still moderately pitched so I think there is a way to go before total failure. I guess I will find out next week if this really is the cause. I would, however, almost put money on it.Many thanks for helping me.
I will, of course, post the outcome so as to help others in a similar situation in the future.

The £168 (12 month) contract is based on appliances up to 5 years old. 😕

Interesting !
Well, they let me take it out (I did it by phone) and I had better get my money’s worth this year then.

martin, in the strictest terms, yes, but just like with hotpoints 5 year parts cover, if usual business is quiet, they will use discretion, best to take £168 for an hours work, less parts that at cost to them is no more than about £50, and get £100 quid in to cover some of your engineers day than pay the engineers to twiddle thumbs or drink tea and eat cafe food… 🙂

Well, the chap came from Bosch today and I explained the problem and what the collective feeling was as to the root cause. He agreed immediately and checked the cost of the repair using his PC. Naturally, the insurance providers fell off their chair and refused to pay. So, the machine will be scrapped as it isn’t worth the cost of repair. The insurance policy has been cancelled.
