Bosch Exxcel 1200 not spinning

Hello,

Bosch Exxcel 1200 washing machine, model number WF 02464 GB.

The machine is not going through the full spin cycle. When I start spin the machine shows 0:11 on the display and the pump runs, though a little noisily. I’ve removed the filter cap and looked inside; the impellor is running. If I put water into the machine then it’s pumped out.

After a pause the drum rotates one way slowly, pauses, reverses, pauses and reverses again. By this time the display is showing 0:10.

Then the drain pump stops, the drum stops and the display goes to 0:01. The machine does not actually spin.

Motor insulation problem. Strip and clean motor thoroughly and test earth leakage to ensure it is greater than 50 meg ohms. Motor can also take out the main control unit. 🙁

Thank you, Martin. I dismantled the machine (this model requires you to lay the machine on its side to get at the motor) and took the motor off and cleaned it out. The bushes were worn through, so I found a local stockist and replaced them.

On a spin with nothing in the drum the machine successfully ran to the full 1200 rpm. So this problem is now solved, but I’ve been left with two others which I’ll raise in a new thread.

Sorry, I was writing the new thread when you posted and I didn’t see your message until after posting. The only advantage of a new thread is that it puts the new faults in the heading; I wasn’t aware of the convention of keeping one thread per machine. My apologies.

Water has got on the electrics I would say. Tip a machine on its side by all means but NOT flat on the floor.

Er.. too late!

Progress to some extent – the display is working again after being left overnight. Either the machine has mechanically “settled” upright again or it’s dried out, but it’s working and seems reliable.

However, the drain “override” is still happening. The drain pump is working; I poured several pints of water into the drum and it all went, so I don’t think it’s an airlock or a priming issue. Is there a sensor that can trigger this behaviour, like the “leak detector” on dishwashers?

Can anyone advise on what I can try doing?

If you laid the machine on its right hand side (looking at it from the front) you may have flooded the pressure switch? With the machine in the upright position, remove the small rubber hose attached to it and check that hose and the air chamber it is connected to is completely clear. Reattach the hose then run machine again.

If the fault is still apparent then it means that either the pressure switch is faulty and needs replacing OR when you tipped it on its side then water got into the control module (as referred to in my previous post) and has taken out the pump switching triac on the PCB…? 🙁

I think a dead triac is unlikely; if I leave the machine off for a while then it starts up correctly and goes faulty after a short while. My experience of triacs is that they don’t fail like that (but there’s always a first time!).

However, the pressure switch sounds more than likely; the machine was certainly on its right hand side yesterday (i.e. soap box next to what became the upper side). Where do I find the pressure switch, please, and can I access it by removing the top of the machine or the teardrop panel?

Washing machine lid off and pressure switch found – thank you.

I detached the rubber hose and I can blow down it. There’s some consistent back pressure, but a steady flow of air. I got the impression that it’s not blocked.

I removed the pressure switch and blew down it; I could hear it click when I blew and click again when I stopped. I think it’s ok, so I reassembled the machine.

Since the spin cycle almost worked yesterday I tried it again. I got called away for a few moments and when I came back the countdown display had gone blank again and the spin light was flashing. That’s something I’ve not seen before; perhaps the fault is becoming more stable?

All suggestions for further action appreciated. My partner is now sending me messages telling me that Currys have a sale on and the washing is piling up. Male pride is a stake! 🙂

Time then now to remove the control module from the fascia and check the ribbon feeder between the display and power board.

Tip: Take a nice photo of the wiring before unplugging all those connections.:idea:

Good advice re taking a photo. 😀

I’ve finally found time to remove the circuit board and the news is not good. A soot trail leads back to a small chip – part number TNY264G. If I’ve understood the data sheet correctly it’s a DC to DC voltage changer – or was.

Clearly something blew it pretty catastrophically and without a circuit diagram and a lot of patience I can’t be sure what – so I can’t verify the original fault has been rectified. There’s no sign of moisture having been on the electronics, though, so it doesn’t like water ingress on the board was the cause.

Being pragmatic, a new circuit board is more than half the price of a new machine. I could try replacing the component, but getting one in will take time and I’m not sure yet that it’s available through retail channels. Also, there’s no guarantee that it’s the only dead component on the board.

Given the pile of washing that’s building up I think I’m in “new machine” territory. Unless you think differently, Martin?

Any recommendations? I’ll be looking at the Which? reports shortly, but all advice based on experience would be welcome.

A new Bosch would be my choice. 😀

Though I don’t know what the current model numbers are in the shops these days but mid-range and upwards the way to go. :tup:

Thank you. I’m also tempted by a Samsung that came out of the Which tests very well.
