ParticipantThis dishwasher has been perfect – until today! It takes in water but then makes a humming noise instead of quietly washing. If I open the door, it looks like the arms have not been going round. All the accessible filters are clean. My gut feeling is a failure of the main wash motor. Although not an appliance technician I am an electrician, so I’m quite happy to dismantle and test things. Does this model use a start capacitor on the wash motor? If I press buttons A and C to cancel the program, it drains the water out normally.
If the diagnosis is a faulty main wash motor, what do people think about putting a replacement costing about £130 into an 8 year old machine?October 5, 2009 at 5:14 pm #298693nomadPaul
ParticipantYou can check the motor by taking off the RHS panel and checking to see if you can turn the motor ‘fins’ by hand . They should turn , albeit with a little tension. If they do turn easily enough and are not seized , then it could be the start capacitor which is a semi easy repair. On checking , i see this machine has a starting relay too that fits to the top of the motor. Have a good look at this – it’ll be a small dark red box on the motor contacts – as these can sometimes fail. It may look black and charred and you’ll smell the burnt plastic.
If the motor won’t turn , then it could be either the motor itself or the sealing kit/impellor blade fitted in the motor…….not the easiest of jobs to replace tbh. In both cases the motor has to come out and the motors aren’t cheap.
Hopefully it’ll be the starting cap and/or relay ( worth ordering both if the motor appears ok )
POWER OFF AND PLUG OUT IF CHECKINGOctober 6, 2009 at 12:09 pm #298694tonypcarter

Thanks for your prompt reply. I have taken the RHS panel off, the motor turned fine and no sign of burnt windings or other components. I then powered it up and watched, the motor runs fine, but with the side panel off it sounds like the impellor in the pump is somehow not attached to the motor anymore. There definitely doesn’t seem to be any water flowing round the machine, hence my remark that the arms didn’t seem to be turning in my first post. The motor is going but it doesn’t seem to be doing any pumping! Is there any way of checking further without taking the motor / pump out which doesn’t look easy?
Thanks for your help.

Further to my post earlier, the impellor is definitely no longer attached to the motor. I discovered there is a little clip-on cover on the RHS of the sump and if I put my finger down the pipe I can feel the impellor – which is just flopping about, no longer joined to the motor. Does anybody know if this part is obtainable separately? Assuming it is, instructions on how to remove the motor / impellor from the sump would be useful. It looks like a bayonet type fitting with a couple of plastic tabs to lock it in position but I may be wrong.
Any help gratefully received.

Thanks for your help – when I got it apart I discovered the impeller had failed in the same way as many others have reported on this forum – the backing plate had separated from the fins. Replaced it, and it all works fine again. Hope it lasts!
