Our trusty old Bosch Exxcel washing machine stopped spinning the clothes, even though the washing and rinsing phases ran through.
I checked the usual stuff ie:
- drain pump pumping well
- filter clear
- drum bearings and belt good
- motor brushes and bearings good
- motor insulation test passed
Next I had a look at the controller behind the front panel, but couldn’t see any obviously damaged components. Then I found a motor drive pcb down at the bottom; I had to take the front panel off to get at this one. Again, it looked fine, so I was pretty much at the end of the line and started to assume an obscure control fault which wasn’t going to be economic to diagnose/repair.
However, I decided to take another look at the motor. It was making a very slight rattling noise when running, even with the drive belt disconnected. I’d put it down to brush noise, but I pulled it for one last look. There’s a tacho assembly on the non-drive end, with the cover held in place with plastic clips. When I took this off, I found a ring magnet that sits on the splined motor shaft and I noticed with great joy that this magnet was loose! (I’m a sad B. !) Whatever had originally held it in place (some kind of rubber coating?) had worn away.
So I cleaned everything up, finishing with some isopropanol, and then araldited the magnet onto the shaft. Tried the washer next day and all was good. A new door rubber and the Bosch has a new lease of life!
I reckon there are probably many washers withe same problem that have gone to washing machine heaven for the sake of a quick repair.
