Keymaster🙁
Like Columbusrobbie (September 2004) I have a problem with a Bosch fridge-freezerENR KVG-3120-GB/01. Quite simply, the fridge-freezer doesn’t work at all and there is not even any sound from the compressor unit.
Checking with a meter, I find that the two mains terminals of the compressor measure open circuit. There is a third terminal (a black wire goes to this and disappears into the fridge-freezer) but I am not an expert on compressors and am not clear what this is for.
I should add that all the lights on the fridge-freezer work normally.
Is this likely to be a compressor fault or a control fault?

Hi Roger
The compressor has three connector pins as you have seen. They are connected to 2 circuits within the compressor, one is usued to start it and the other to allow it to continue to run.
The top pin is the common connection of both start and run windings so a check can be made as follows…
Measure the resistance between the top pin and one of the bottom two pins and note the reading (prolly between 10 and 25 ohms)
Measure the resistance between the top pin and the other bottom pin and note the reading (again prolly between 10 and 25 ohms)
Measure the resistance between the two bottom pins…this should be equal to the sum of the previous two measurements (you are now testing through both windings together)
If there is an open cicuit reading between any of the pins then the compressor has failed. This part is not repairable, it can be replaced but this is a big expensive job so if your appliance is of any great age or low value then it means a new machine i’m afraid.
Once again make sure the machine is fully isolated (unplugged) before any work is carried out.

Many thanks for that, Clive.
As a matter of interest, one reading was 11 ohms and the other open circuit so that explains why the machine doesn’t work. It’s only four years old – I’m not surprised there is a fast-growing fridge mountain in the UK! Surely in this day and age it ought to be possible for machines to be designed in a modular way so that replacing a compressor doesn’t result in the need to junk the whole machine? A real opportunity for an innovative entrepreneur perhaps.
Many thanks Clive – it has saved me the cost of an abortive service call and I’m indebted to you.

Clive / Roger,
Was surfing for solutions with my Bosch frodge freezer for which I accidentally, whilst moving , yanked out the lead that connects the fridge to the power. The lead has a brown, blue and yellow / Green earth.
I opened the back of the fidge to connect the lead back and noticed , that the fridge has a brown, black and Earth (green / yellow wire).
I connected the brown in the lead to the brown of the fridge, the blue of the lead to the black of the fridge and the earth to the earth. When I switch the fridge on the fuse in the plug blows. If I only connect the earth and brown of the lead to the fridge thereby leaving the black uncoonected then the fridge works.
Can you tell me is this correct? I dont think so but the fridge works? Please advise on the purpose of the black wire

Please do not tamper any further, you need an engineer !!
And please do NOT plug the appliance back in to the power, you could cause permanent damage to the appliance.
I don’t wish to appear rude but it is evident that merely connecting the leads as you think has not worked.
Let us know your postcode and someone should be able to help with a service visit.
Dave.

New to this forum so bare with me.
I have a KGV3104GB/04 and following us defrosting the freezer section, admittedly with fan heater blowing air into freezer section, the fridge will not start. All lights are on, but no noise. I guess I should ask if defrosting with blown air from fan heater will damage a fridge frezzer?
I checked the compresser as above, but not sure if this will apply to my model of freezer. Black wire which looks like feed from circuit board to blue is 11 ohms, black to brown sire is O/S.
Might this mean my compresser is blown for some reason?
When power is on, no mains feed voltage is present on black wire, but not sure if this is normal as its fed from a TRIAC device on the circuit board.
Is it the compressor?? Can I try anything else to verify further?
Thanks 😀

Hi jazzer
First thing to check is the obvious like power on etc, and also bear in mind that (IIRC) there is a delay start on the Bosch appliances which means it won’t actually start the compressor for about 10 minutes.
If you still have problems then it’s time to call an engineer…click the link below to see if we have one near you.
