ParticipantI have a older Bosch fridge/freezer that makes quite a loud pop noise and trip the RCD.
This has happened 3 times in the last 3 months so it’s not persistent or frequent
The first time this happened, it made a loud pop noise, the fridge lamp was blown & the RCD tripped.
I was able to switch the RCD back on immediately, replaced the fridge lamp (thinking it’s fridge lamp that caused it) and everything was working ok & seems fine. The second time, four days later, same problem, it made a loud pop noise, tripped the RCD, except the fridge lamp was not blown & able to switch the RCD back on immediately & everything working.
The third time, almost 3 months without any problem, it made a loud pop once again, tripped the RCD again, able to switch the RCD back on immediately & everything working again!
Any advice on what to do?
Faulty fridge/freezer, time to replace?

Moderatorwell my first thing to check would be a supressor. follow the cable in and there is normally a mains supressor
look for cracks and damage

ParticipantIs the mains suppressor a cylindrical looking part?
If so, there’s no crack or damage.March 14, 2022 at 11:37 am #481613electrofix
Moderatorlikely yes but there may also be a start capacitor which looks the same
the supressor will have the live and neutral of the mains wire going straight to itDave

ParticipantI have identified the compressor on the right, than the relay switch with a cover attached onto the left side of compressor & further to the left side is a separate long tall silver cylindrical part?

ParticipantIf it the suppressor that is faulty, with no signs of crack or damage, how would I find this out?
Is it an easy fix?Thanks

After checking online for information on this model, the silver cylindrical part is a 4UF capacitor, so is this the suppressor? Thanks

ParticipantI have managed to look at this model parts lists with diagrams on the Bosch website.
there’s the compressor with a plastic cover box on the left side.
The plastic cover removed from the box, shows a start relay
The large silver start capacitor has a cable connected to the plastic cover box
What does the suppressor look like? Thanks

Moderatorcant see one listed on the diagram so it must be part of something else
normally there is a suppressor as soon as the cable enters the appliance but it may be part of the pcbsomething is shorting out causing your pop
you have to go looking for any connector that may have water ingress problems. pay attention to the lamp holder and see if there is any signs of flashing over
problem here is if it is a short it will likely damage the main board at some point

ParticipantThe first time it tripped the RCD, the lamp was blown, the second & third time, RCD tripped, the lamp was ok
It’s probably tricky and time consuming to find the cause of the fault, quite annoying the problem is not persistent/constant as the interval between each time it tripped the RCD, 4 days & than almost 3 months!
If the main board is damaged, maybe this is causing the RCD tripping & not economically viable to get it repair?
The fridge/freezer is over 10 years and unless it’s an easy fix, do it yourself, I don’t want to waste too much time stripping it down to look for the fault (probably easier to buy a new fridge/freezer)
Thanks
