I’m a bit worried about the state of my current IKEA/Whirlpool fridge freezer, so I’m checking the net for a potential replacement in case the one I’ve got decides to call it a day as I don’t like visiting the shop in a hurry not knowing what to look for and, more importantly, what to avoid.

I’ve had good experiences with Bosch before, especially their dishwashers, so my initial preference was to pick a Bosch fridge freezer. However, from what I can tell on the net, it seems these are not made in Germany, but in (of all places) Turkey! Can anyone confirm this? And are some of them made in Spain as well, or are they all now made in Turkey? Is there any way of knowing for certain (I would guess that the Turkish one don’t say “Made in EU”)?

I’m also looking at Electrolux fridge freezers, which seem to be made in Hungary nowadays. Does anyone have any experience with these, e.g. the ENA34933W? Are they any good, and are they as good as the Bosch ones?

Any other recommendations, apart from the obvious (i.e. Liebherr and Miele :))?

Re: Bosch fridge freezers – made in Turkey?

id pick a turkish bosch over even an italian made zanussi/elux at the moment.

just stay away from frost free.

if you want german you need to buy liebherr or miele (liebherr with miele branding and pricetag)

have you considered gorenje? (http://www.gorenje.co.uk) very reliable machines. only negative is some of the plastic trays are a bit flimsy, but saying that, bosch freezer bins are fairly brittle nowadays too.

ps turkish boschs have “made in turkey” printed on the cardboard packaging

    Thanks for the feedback.

Does that mean that current Electrolux fridge freezers are not on par with Bosch ones these days?

Staying away from frost free, is that general advice regardless of brand, or are there problems with Bosch frost free models in particular?

Gorenje could be an alternative, but they seem to be a bit hard to find (except if I buy online, but I don’t like doing that with whitegoods).

Anyway, for now my current Whirlpool seems to be working despite what appears to be a crack on the back wall inside the fridge compartment, as well as something looking like a tiny hole in the lower left corner of the back wall where ice tends to build up. As long as it works, I’m hanging onto it :).

the tiny hole is probably a drainage hole. if its icing up its probably blocked with crud. should be able to force the block off ice out with finger pressure, then rod the hole with a semi-flexible blunt object. dont use knitting needles or other rigid pointy items 😉

and yes imo current crop of elux just doesnt seem to last. and yes, frost free in general…

What is the problem with frost free fridge freezers – are they generally unreliable?

As for my fridge, the mentioned hole (if it is a hole, that is) doesn’t really look like a drainage hole as far as I can tell. Have a look at the ice block on this picture:

It’s a bit difficult to spot it in this picture, but it seems to be behind the ice block on the right side. (The ice block has been a lot bigger than it is on this picture, not much left of it when that picture was taken…)

And here’s a picture of the crack I mentioned – anything to be worried about?
