Our electric oven seems to be getting hotter than expected. The thermostat ‘appears’ to be working (in the sense that you can hear it clicking on and off, and this is reflected by an indicator on the front panel). I really need to get hold of an oven thermometer to check it out, but is it possible for an oven thermostat to fail in this way? (i.e. it switches at a higher temperature than you’ve set) Or is there another more likely cause?

    Hello Stompa

Yes this can happen, thermostats like almost everything else can develop a fault. Depending on the symptons you are getting, it could also be other factors. What makes you think it is overheating?

We cooked a shop bought pie in it today (of a type we’ve had many times before), and it seemed to cook significantly quicker than normal. The pastry was starting to become burnt after about 25 mins, whereas we normally leave it in for 40 mins.

If it’s still behaving oddly tomorrow I’ll get a thermometer. I know they’re not particularly accurate, but it should give some indication of whether the temperature inside changes according to the temperature setting of the oven (i.e. whether the thermostat is really doing anything at all).

    Thanks
