I’m getting a lot of jammed freezer fans on the Bosch KGN34X60GB/01… I just spin them a bit and they then work perfectly (and I’ve yet to have one come back).
Yesterday I heard John Lewis were recalling these models and Bosch were reparing them with a conversion(?)

I know we have some Bosch engineers here, so would be gratefull to know what this conversion does… and if it’s for the fan, what the part number is.

Hi we have been doing these conversions for months on both the kgn33 and kgn34’s. The problem is the drain hole pipe at rear gets blocked due to being in a u-bend to stop any smells returning but this is causing the pipe to freeze. The mod. includes a drain heater, new pcb and a metal sheet which fits inside the freezer section.

    Drain Heater 642980
    Sheet 479167

Oh and by the way 50/50 chance that it works.

Remember that the drain heater only needs to be fitted on appliances built before January 2007 . Any KGN built after this time has the drain tube heater built-in already.
The real problem that causes the over-icing of the evaporator is that the defrost cycle isn’t quite strong/long enough to clear all the ice from the evaporator when its on that phase . This leaves a small amount of ice which gradually builds up over time.

The module increases the defrost time.
The evaporator plate acts as a heat deflector and keeps the heat from the defrost heater within the confines of the evaporator itself , hopefully ensuring a full defrost.

Personally , i also think the design of the defrost heater and the tray it sits in leave a lot to be desired . The rear area is angled down and the ice build-up is always above this area where the heater is furthest away from the evaprator .

I’ve not had to return to any that have had the latest mod (module/plate) fitted unless some silly fault introduced, like blowing the thermal fuse, nor seen any later models affected.

    Yet.

Thanks everyone for the info… so nothing to do with the fan sticking.

Is there a trick to getting the cover off underneath the evaporator. Have removed polystyrene and plastic sheet underneath but just wondering if ice is sticking it to rear.

Yes Simon , it will be. There are 2 ways of doing it really. One is lots of hot water syringed into the evaporator to melt the ice……the much much easier way is to let it defrost for 24/48hrs

Cheers Paul. An hour with hairdryer and still frozen!
