ParticipantHad this machine trouble free for ten years – so can’t really complain. Recently it has developed a tapping noise which gets faster and louder as the spin speed increases (doesn’t happen on wash cycles, only when the drum begins to rock when spinning). Took top off and checked that nothing was fouling the sides, and drum bearings ok. However, when innards are moved to the right the click occurs. Judging from where the sound comes from I think it may be the bottom left shock absorber making the noise as it flexes sideways. The anchor points are sound and rubber bushes intact. The machine is in the garage so noise doesn’t bother us. However, is there a potential disaster ahead? Will shock absorber collapse? I would replace the shocker, but while the end anchored to the machine floor is a straightforward captive nut and bolt job, the anchorage at the drum looks a little more complex. Is it a viable do-it-yourself job?

It COULD be the drum support spider, which is inside the tub.
Normally when they fail it will give a rapid knocking when spinning.May 26, 2011 at 5:54 pm #352230Applianceman2010

It could be quite a few different things including concrete weight, bearing spider or it flcoyld be a raised segment within the the motor. Can you upload a YouTube video I could prob tell you from that.

Thanks guys. The concrete weight is secure and not suspect. The motor turns smoothly when I turn drum using the spider, and runs smoothly on wash cycle. By spider I presume you mean the spoked wheel at the back of the drum which houses the drum spindle. I can reproduce the knocking noise by gently rocking the drum assembly from side to side, using the concrete block as a handhold. Will sort out a video for YouTube.

The spoked wheel you can see at the rear is the drum pulley.
The support spider is inside the outer tub.May 26, 2011 at 8:12 pm #352233Applianceman2010

No the spider is what can best be described as the “drum support”. If you look inside the drum you can see the shape of it inprinted into the back of the inner metal drum. That shape then connects to a shaft that runs out the back through the bearings and out to the belt and pulley. What happens is that with detergent and corrosion causes one,two or even all three “legs” of the spider can snap and let the inner drum move and hit the outer drum causing the tapping noise that you can hear…. HTH
Edit, sorry just to clarify just explaining that i meant by “spider”

It wont be shaft or bearing as he has said the noise is replicated by rocking the drum from side to side.
Drum not turning 😕There are a couple of things that can cause this tapping noise;
It could be the locking nuts located on feet not secure.
If the feet locking nuts have never been tightened up to the chassis then it can cause the cabinet to rock and twist, it could eventually causing a crack in the joint weld of the chassis. (which I have come across once)
Or could be worn suspension legs.

Thanks for all the ideas. I think Steven is on the right track when he mentions suspension legs. I presume these are what I referred to as the two shock absorbers. They’re attached to the drum and go out at an angle to each side and are bolted to the machine floor. The loud click comes from this area when I gently sway the entire unit inside to the right. It’s as if the strut makes the noise as it is forced sideways. However, I will check those locking nuts! The strut fitting to the drum looks a bit complex – a sort of pin arrangement with a plastic dome covering one end – could this be a special tool job?

If anyone’s still interested here are a couple of videos of the rogue washer! The first shows washer at full speed.
Find it at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMSwXoQmWrw and the next, just after the spin cycle has clicked off is at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLcQy0Zt9bQ
Earplugs required for first video!May 28, 2011 at 9:58 pm #352237gandh1

easiest way to eliminate the motor is to take the belt off then do a spin, but id agree, pegs, legs or leg brackets. the other is a bra wire springing back and slapping the back of the tub, but youll get a 2-tone sound – i.e a tinkletaptinkletap when that happens…
edit: (after watching vidlinx)
just remembered a hotpoint wd that did the same thing, it had managed to shake the p/switch out of its mount.
i think its time to lid off, trial test on spin (with load) and then go from there. otherwise id still suspect bearings, but with a fwd to bkwd play ala zanussi, rather than up and down play. does it make the noise on an empty spin ???
