ParticipantMy Bosch HM48141 oven has just died. Mrs S tells me it made a ‘funny noise’ and when she opened it to get stuff out it was not hot.
Now I’ve taken the back off (inside the oven), and can see that part of the element seems to have ‘burst’, so the element clearly needs replacing. The thing that concerns me though is that the fan (which sits in the middle of the element) is also not running. Can a failed element cause the fan not to run?
Or would I be correct in supposing that the most likely scenario is that the fan has failed which then caused the element to overheat and die?
If the latter, then both the fan and element would need replacing, and given the price of spares I guess it would probably make sense to just get a new oven.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

you say the fan is not running, how have you come to this conclusion? also, a pattern fan for boschs is widely available at about £50 cheaper than an original part. i would argue without paying for labour, a pattern fan, and pattern or genuine element for this is a better buy than shelling out £400 for an equivalent bosch/neff oven… unless its absolutely ghastly and filthy inside 😉

By simply opening the oven door and looking through the fan vent at the back of oven I could see that it was not spinning.
Having said that, I tried this morning and the fan is running as usual. Is there some sort of (thermal?) cutout on the fan that takes several hours to reset itself?
Thanks

As far as I am aware, no, there’s not a cut out.
Those fan motors do fail though and that motor running slow, cutting out or just plain not running, will cause the element to fail. It’s not uncommon to have people replace the fan oven element only to be replacing it a few months later because the fan motor is a bit dodgy.
It’s easy to miss though as the natural assumption is that if the element fails and the fan works then it’s just the element at fault.
I can’t find the model but assuming it’s this element or a clone, it’s not helped by the fact that there’s a number of lower quality ones that blow prematurely as well.

OK, thanks.kwatt wrote:I can’t find the model but assuming it’s this element or a clone, it’s not helped by the fact that there’s a number of lower quality ones that blow prematurely as well.
It’s actually this one:

it also depends on the wear and tear to the fan motor, occasionally all you need to do is clean them up as its only a build up of grease and food residue which causes them to become intermittent and stick/slow, but you kinda need to have seen enough good ones and enough bad ones to know when thats a possibility. hth

OK, many thanks. It’s actually not particularly old (4 years), so hopefully there won’t be a vast amount of gunk, though obviously it also depends on usage.
