Bosch precision WFG2420 – non functioning

Hi all

Having fairly recently got into the idea of actually fixing the inevitable problems that occur in equipment rather than just buying a new item the second even the smallest thing goes wrong (something I’m very guilty of, but the environmentalists are getting to me!), I’ve decided to have a go at today’s failure: A Bosch Precision WFG2420 washing machine approximately 6 years old.

Has been working 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} fine, until yesterday. Stopped half way through a wash, sitting there with the active light on steadily, not doing anything. Couldn’t force it to drain, spin or do anything. Powered off, drained machine, checked filter and pipes (totally clean, but fiddled with it anyway) and powered back on. Now the water has gone can clearly identify a grinding noise if you try and engage the machine in any way – drain, spin, wash, you name it. It’s not terribly loud, but it’s there and the machine won’t do anything else.

Had a good nose through the forums and it does appear a version of this question was asked some time ago, but no answer is posted, so I’m hoping to pick someone’s brains on this one. Oh, I have two small kids, so we’re doing a lot of loads right now, my missus has given me 24 hours to identify the problem (before we drown in dirty washing) before she orders the new Hoover OPH616 that she fancies.

Frankly, I’m not sure she wants me to fix it, but I’ll give it a go anyway seeing as I have a ‘Jack Bauer’ style time slot. Any ideas anyone?

Set it to spin and see if the motor runs – you’ll need to wait about a minute before it comes on. Grinding noise may be the pump.

Don’t let her buy the Hoover.

Thanks for coming back to me Penguin. Still got 12 hours to go!

You were right – the spin DOES active quite happily, though the grinding noise is still in the background, it is clearly independent of the spinning mechanism – what does that mean?

Is the Hoover a bad buy? what would you recommend in the case that the existing machine isn’t repairable?

Get the Bosch looked at its 100 times better than the Hoover machine.

Hello again all.

Well, in the absence of any meaningful response, we purchased the Hoover machine and will be disposing of the old Bosch. Now it doesn’t matter might just have a play with it and see what it was. As mentioned previously the guy who posted the same fault didn’t get a response either – I guess no one knows the answer on this one? I’ll do what I can to have a look and report back so other people know. IN the meantime, if any of the experts know where to tell me where to start that would be great – let’s at least get an answer for the next guy!

and put hoover/candys number on your speed dial

infact, book a service call for two days after delivery, that should nail it, then when the engineers been, rebook a call for a week later

this might seem extreme, but you wont believe how many pcbs/selectors/motors/door locks and, yes, drums (welded) i fit
