ParticipantAs the subject suggests I am getting white deposits on my dishware. Also, the machine is not cleaning that well with tea stains building up on cups etc.
According to the manual the problem is one of…
1. too little rinse aid
2. no regenerating salt
3. salt lid not secure.I regularly top up with rinse aid and the salt lid is secure, so I am inclined to discount solutions one and three.
The salt container is full of salt and the level hardly goes down at all, so I am thinking that maybe the problem is here. I’ve had the machine out and tried to fathom how the salt is used within the machine, but can’t figure it out.
Do I have some sort of blockage or is water not flowing where is should?
Thanks in anticipaion of your help.

Hi Mick,
When you say “residue” what do you mean? Is it powder residue or is it a white film you’re getting?
I assume that you have cleaned the filters and the spray arms as well as checking that the spray arms are freely turning?

Hi! Thanks for the speed of your response 🙂
I can confirm that filters are clean, and that spray arms are functioning correctly.
This is a white film. On glass it will clear when you wet it but reappears as the glass dries.

The most likely cause is limscale, which you can test by wiping a bit with vinegar and see if it clears it. If it doesn’t then it will be iredesence and there’s a thread in this forum about that if you search for that word.
If it’s primarily on glass then it could be “clouding” which can have a few reasons to occur, but try the vinegar first then we can revisit it if needed.
The tea stains are a nightmare to remove, even I have to manually wash some crockery for that depending on how good it is generally I guess.

Hi!
Tried the vingar test and it seems to clear the glass.
Tried a search on the other word…but that didn’t yield any results 🙁

KeymasterThat’s okay, if the vinegar cleared it then it’s limescale filming.
You can get rid of a load by adding about 40g of citric acid, which you can get from a chemist, to the dispencer and then do a normal wash cycle.
If the salt is set to dispence the correct dosage, as you obviously live in a hard water area, then I’d suggest that you may need a replacement salt cap and/or a resin container to correct the issue. Although I’d advise that you also check the dosages used in line with the instructions for both detergent and rinse aid before doing that.
Hope that helps.

Hello again…
This dishwasher is about 20 years old…it has been working fine until now. The salt and rinse aid setting were set up as per the instruction booklet and all has been well from day one.
The thing that has changed is that the salt is now hardly being used at all. So my guess is that in the absense of waer softening the limescale is being deposited on both the dishware and the inside of the machine.
This leads me to think that the salt is not being used correctly.
Is salt dispensed into the machine? or does water just flow through the salt container?

KeymasterI’m going to try and do an article on this a bit later today funnily enough, but it’s actually a chemical process and at that age i’d strongly suspect that the salt chamber is goosed just through age. If it’s still available the cost to replace it would probably not be justifiable. 🙁

Salt Valve failure I reckon…easy to sort
New valve (Part no : 051835 available via emailing spares@ukwhitegoods.co.uk)
They usually either go open circuit or just sieze up through time and a new valve will be a cheap and easy way out of your problem. 😀
If you want someone local to fit it for you at a modest cost?…try :-
