I have an ancient Bosch S5N27B that has been working faithfully for almost 20 years. It starts it’s cycle and fills initially then once the element starts to heat the water it drains and does not refill. is this the end of the road or it there a fix a reasonably competent amateur can perform.

    Best wishes

Most likely is that the anti-flood switch has activated and there’s water in the base tray. As a rule the black rubber sump hose gets blocked and the water level float chamber overfills out onto the base tray. Activating the flood switch which turns on the drain pump. So, very fixable I would say.:D

Just run it again. It fills the okay for the initial rinse/wash though there is not enough water to cover the element. then once the wash phase starts there is no water in the tank itself just a very hot and lonely element.

OK, Firstly the water never covers the element. (The normal water level is just lapping the salt cap). The problem is most likely a sticking float micro switch, so the left hand side panel needs to come off to check that switch and the fill matrix.
