Bosch S6R28B SMI2022GB/08 Spinner arm Water Intake

This is an ancient (1992) semi Integrated machine with mechanical timer. It has given faithful service. I have had to replace one wheel on a rack, the defective rinse aid function is served by all in one tablets and the facia panel is a bit manky. Yes it owes me nothing as it is once a day for 28 years. The machine has only ever been used on the the shortest wash, number 3.However just before Christmas it didn’t sound right. Water appeared to be trickling into the main chamber rather than being flung out by the spinner arms. When set to start at number 3 the drain pump kicks in and pumps out residual water. It then starts taking in water, albeit it very slowly with water entering the main chamber via pipe halfway up left side of machine. It seemed to do this at various stages when the machine is filling with water. I noticed that it was also necessary to tap the aquastop valve for water to flow. I replaced the aquastop valve and it opens as it should. However flow still seems minimal. Furthermore the impeller spins slowly with water bubbling out each end. Occasionally it will fire up and you can hear the impeller going round very fast and water spashing out. However open the door and close it again and it is back to slowly turning. I can see no blockages in the impeller arm. Have I the misfortune of multiple faults or is there one issue causing this malfunction.

sound like the motor is not starting properly

some of these early ones used a start relay mounted on the end of the motor
its possible the contacts in that relay anre getting a bit hit and miss

there are also some motors that use a capacitor start and these can easily fail and give these sort of problems. have found a pic of one below. the cap is arrowed

Electrofix, thank you for your suggestions. I will have to extract the dishwasher from its lair (groan) to have a look at the type of circulation pump motor concerned. The impeller appears to turn throughout the program when it normally should do, albeit it at a feeble rate. I notice that when I open the door to see what is going on the water level in the chamber seems very low on certain parts of the program. The water just about reaches the heater element and there is a lot of resultant hissing as it turns to steam. What dictates the level of water in the chamber? Should the heater not always be submerged if the programmer is heating the water? If the spinner was working properly I imagine it would drench the element if there was less water in the chamber but that seems a dodgy way of heating a lesser amount of water in the chamber. Heater relies on water raining on it and need not be submerged. There are stats on it so it does not get too hot

Thanks for the explanation re low level of water and the heater element. I have extracted the dishwasher from its lair and removed the left side panel. This has revealed the end of the circulation pump motor. There is a klixon type relay, as per the photo above, fitted to this particular motor. I have removed the relay and examined it. There is continuity in the coil. Not sure how to test it further in the absence of a substitute item. I thought handling and a bit of a shake would have been sufficient to coax it to work at least once as previously the spinner arm did occasionally spin at full pressure when I was trying the machine. No such luck! The pump does whirr away but I am not sure if it is sufficiently fast, hence low pumping pressure.

its a bit odd it works somtimes but am coming off the relay idea. if it was a cap then that may have been it

the relay starts the motor, once its running it does not do anything else. From what you are saying it starts ok but does not push enough water through but it does sometimes

sounds like a blockage that clears itself every now and then
if you drain all the water out of the sump you can look at the impeller with a small mirror and a torch. try looking to see if you can see anything it may have swallowed like plastic

There was nothing else but to take out the motor and look at the impeller end. Alas the pink plastic impeller had parted from its base ( hard to see but looks like impeller had little protrusions that pushed into holes on the base ) and it was free to freewheel of its own accord. It must have been on its way out so to speak. Occasionally the base and impeller decided to get together the odd time making me think there was an electrical fault. Unfortunately the outer assembly with the outlets appears welded/stuck to the base and will not come apart. Little chance I suppose of it being available after all these years not at first glance anyway. The motor is available though not much use to me. If you have any suggestions as to where i might get one it would be appreciated. Anyway thanks for all your help in trying to sort the matter out. As I said at the outset the machine owes me nothing after 28 years. Take care with your covid dodging.

With no dishwasher over Christmas this machine could well be cited in possible divorce proceedings! Forgive me, but I shall in the meantime try other routes too, to see if I can get the part. Regards
