ParticipantHere’s a little one to ponder.
Attended a Bosch WFR2866GB/01 on Wednesday. No display, no start. After a detailed technical anaylisis known as a-poke-about, it was pretty obvious that the computer board was as mad as a hatter, or even Goatboy.
So……
P/no 480829 – £154.91 plus VAT = £182.02 + 1.5 hrs labour = £60 = £242.02.Customer (quite rightly IMO) horrified. Rings BSH on Thursday. They tell him that they will turn up with the board at 50{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} discount against list as a gesture of goodwill because the machine’s not very old, and fit it for £60 as well! I make the total £161.51, with the VAT.
Since when can’t we compete with manufacturer service? BSH quoted me £131 + VAT for the board with a trade discount, so, OK bit of profit on the part – sure as hell doesn’t come to 50{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} off though.
Says a lot about the margins being made on parts doesn’t it?
Oh, and the bloody customer hasn’t paid me for work so far……..

Do you really want to open that particular can of worms? There’s a big warning label on it advising that you don’t.

Open it? I thought that this was amongst our “raison d’etre”s? Open it and stir it…..
A long time ago, I ran White Goods Spares for Comet. Our margin on any spare was 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} – we doubled the price. If it was pennies, 26p was the minimum price (I told you this was a long time ago) – this could come to as much as 750{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}! If the repair was chargeable, the service department was quite likely to double it again.
Anyway, clear evidence that we’re being ripped off? Or shall we accept that stocking, storage, stock control, handling and dispatch really put the price up that much?
Personally, and with first hand experience, I don’t think so.

It’s not just BSH Group that play this game, it’s all of them IMO.
Virtually all spares are massively over-priced.
