Hello, hoping someone can help us with this… my girlfriend and I bought a secondhand Bosch dishwasher off eBay for £50 – the usual thing, seller is having new kitchen fitted, claims dishwasher to be in full working order.
It seemed to run ok the first time we tried running it empty, but since then it’s stopped draining properly – there’s always an inch or so of mucky water in the bottom, and the dishes don’t exactly come up sparkling clean, there’s a bit of a sort of film on them.
So far, reading advice on the internet, we have removed and cleaned the filters, which needed doing but didn’t help. Last night, having finally located my Torx screwdriver bit, I checked whether the impeller was blocked, which it didn’t seem to be. There were a couple of broken fins on the cog-type thing that spins round, but that didn’t look to me that it would stop the thing from working.
I also created a high loop in the drain hose in case waste water was just draining back into the dishwasher, but having run it on empty again, I don’t think it’s getting that far. It seems to make a sort of ticking noise at the end of the cycle when it should be draining.
Other research seems to suggest that the next step would be replacing the impeller jug, but I thought first that I’d check that was a good idea with people who know what they’re on about. I’m wary of throwing good money after bad – tempted to just get another secondhand Bosch off eBay but of course the next one may have a problem with it too…
I’m not a technical genius but I’m capable of following instructions and doing repairs provided they’re not too complex…

Forget the Impeller jug and replace the pump. Drain out problems, broken fins on pump impeller….the clues are there my friend. 😉

Thanks Martin – is that a reasonably simple job, would you say? I see you have a generic replacement available for £17, so it’s not going to break the bank I guess…

Thanks Martin – it’s a month later and I’ve finally got enough time to have a go at fitting it. All the instructions I’ve found online seem to suggest it’s easy enough once I’ve got the base plate off but I can’t work out how to do that… there don’t seem to be any obvious screws or fixings to remove. There’s one thing that might be some sort of clip but there doesn’t seem to be a way of getting it to unfasten without breaking it. I’ve not been able to get the original manual from the Bosch website, which I guess doesn’t help.

Lay it back at 45 degs. Metal baseplate just unclips at its front edge.

Are you sure? The entire underside looks like white plastic rather than metal. There’s a metal plate directly underneath the door which is attached by two torx screws at the side and four clips under the bottom of the door, and I’ve managed to undo that but there’s wiring attached to it on the right hand side and besides, although I can kind of see in, it doesn’t give me enough access to get to anything.

Oops sorry! yes it has a plastic base you model having just checked with Bosch. Easy enough access with bottom plastic kick panel and front metal inspection plate removed. Easier still if you also remove the outer door panel should you wish. Ensure no water is left in the sump first by removing the filters and soaking up what water lies in the bottom. Otherwise when you unclip the pump what water is in there will run into the plastic base. Power disconnected first don’t forget. :zap:

I failed to remove the door, but managed to remove the wiring assembly that was attached to the metal inspection plate, and after a lot of fiddling and jiggling, the old pump is out and the new one is in!
I almost don’t care if it works, having got it fitted is an achievement in itself. I feel great now!
In passing, I took the side plate off while trying to work out how to get the base plate off, and have replaced the drain hose with the new one I bought from you.
While the side plate was off, I had a look at the bubble matrix thing that the water passes through. There was a lot of black gunk in the top corner of it, in the pressure chamber. Could that be causing a problem, or is it normal?
I flushed it with some warm water and that got a little of the gunk out, but most of it is still in there.

Forget the black gunge in the top left hand corner, never usually an issue. Ain’t broke don’t mend. 😉

It’s having a test run now. The only snag was, I couldn’t get the middle of the three Torx screws that I’d removed (in my unsuccessful attempt to remove the door) to line up well enough with the hole they’re supposed to go in for the screws to bite, so it’s running without those in. I suppose it’ll do well enough without it.
Is there a knack to lining the door up so those screws can go back in? The spring-loadedness of the door mechanism seems to pull the inner part of it away from the screw hole, and the only way to line the two holes up again is to stick a thin screwdriver in there and lever it in to place… but of course as soon as you take the screwdriver out it goes out of alignment again.
Oh, and this is a classic mistake, but there were two more Torx screws that I’d removed at some point in the process of taking the inspection panel and sides off and I couldn’t figure out where they’d come from when I was putting everything back together. I’d meant to take scrupulous notes, but you know how it is.

I’ve never ever experienced a problem with outer door panel Torx screw fitting or the door spring tension. And I’ve been repairing the darn things since 1975 adding up to 1,000 ‘s so I’m struggling to figure what you’re on about TBH? Unless of course you’ve stripped the PK screw hole in which case it will never fit.

The new pump seems to work ok (I’ve heard it in action) but alas it hasn’t fixed the problem. Still ending up with a load of water in the bottom of the dishwasher.
On the plus side, at least I know how to take it apart now – and we know the pump is good.
Is there anything else worth replacing (that bubble thing? the impeller jug?), or shall I just give this one up as a bad job?
