Bosch SGS5002GB/07 timer stops/not heating

I have a bosch sgs5002gb dishwasher and the timer stops at 4 0’clock position and if I advance the knob ,it stops again at 9 o’clock position if I advance it again it will complete the cycle but there is no heat inside to dry the dishes. I suspected the heater was not heating so after reading posts on this forum took the front cover off to check the pcb for dry joints but noticed a thermostat just above the soap dispenser , when I checked this it read open circuit. is this likely to be the cause of both problems and if so where can I get one from ? I looked on this site but the only thermostat found looks longer and has a different fitting.

Looking on Bosch’s spare parts web site I see it listed as part no: 00165385. To confirm the heater works simply temporarily short out that safety stat. Though in my experience the heater itself being faulty the more usual case.

Thanks Martin , I shorted it out but still the same, I will check the heater element tomorrow, if it is faulty would that also cause the timer stopping problem ?

Yes the timer goes ‘on hold’ until the thermostat (thermistor in fact) on the heater unit allows the timer to continue through the cycle.

Thanks Martin, so the thermostat I tested could be ok, would I right in thinking that the thermostat closes when it detects that the temperature has been reached , and that the heater may be the problem, there doesn’t seem to be a pcb behind the controls, also do you know if the heater is accessed from the side or the base on this model ?

You refer to the safety overheat cutout and not the thermostat. That is located on the heater unit accessible after removing the RH side panel. Your machine does not have a PCB controller.

Hi Martin ,
I googled part 00165385 and it came up as cycling thermostat or temp regulator. I found that when I heated that part with a hairdryer it changed from open to short circuit .
I refitted it and tried heating it but the timer still wouldn’t advance. I then checked the heater connections and got a reading of 22 ohms so it appears to be ok. I checked the voltage across it and at no time did it have a reading. however the microswitch that sits on the element plastic housing has voltage with reference to the one side of the heating element so it seems that the microswitch is not being activated. the switch seems to be activated by a plunger that comes out of the element assy. and its supply comes from a unit on top of the plastic housing, I presume this is a thermostat. do you think changing this whole assy would fix the fault and does it come complete with element/thermostat and microswitch ? also do you know the part number as I have been unable find it.

The microswitch is indeed operated by a plunger of sorts or flow control device to put it another way. That is operated by the rapid flow of water from the main circulating pump through the heater box and up to the spray arms. I would think you are getting poor circulation of water through to those spray arms. So either the holes in the spray arms are clogged or the circulating pump impeller is either broken or blocked. The latter you can inspect from the sump using a small inspection mirror and torch. If its clogged you can often clear any detritus with a hooked bit of wire or some such….Enjoy! 🙂

Hi Martin I checked the above and no obvious problems seen. do I need to take the sump unit out for closer inspection or is there anything else you can suggest ?

Do the spray arms rotate OK when the circulating pump fires up? If not the impeller is either blocked or broken OR it hasn’t filled with sufficient water, not enough in order for the flow to operate the microswitch.

the impeller looked ok in the mirror but seemed stiff to turn, I think the arms do rotate but not sure if they rotate properly, hard to tell with the door closed.

can the pump be removed for inspection without removing the sump ?

The official procedure for access to the circulating pump is by removing the tub. Lid, door panel, side panels and tub unscrewed from the base and sump fixings. Then the tub lifts away giving full access to all the components in the base.

That’s how I do it and I wouldn’t consider any other method. For example the turning the whole dishwasher upside down method or the prise the base away bodge.
