    Hi everybody.
I am a first timer to your forum, looking for some advice if possible.
My SGS5302GB/07 has just started to make a noise which sounds like a motor working hard to turn something over, but not doing anything. This starts when the wash programme should be starting. I have felt with my fingers in to where the pump impeller is, and it seems to be moving as well as I can tell. Because I only had a new electronic controller fitted to this machine 12 months which cost quite a bit, I feel more inclined to have it fixed / try to fix it, than perhaps I would if it had never been repaired before. If this is an impeller and or pump fault, how feasible is it for a non white goods engineer to access the necessary parts on this machine? I can work on cars ok, but dishwashers are new ground! I can’t even figure out how to get at the impeller!
    Any advice respectfully received.

Is the circulation motor making a humming noise? It is a capacitor start/run motor. If the capacitor loses it’s ability to charge, the motor gets power but will not go.

The correct way to check that the motor is free to turn is to remove the lid and the r/h side panel and gently move the motor from that end. Power off first, of course.

    Capacitor is HERE if required.

It sounds more like a motor going round than a power hum. A bit like a car engine being cranked over but it not firing. How do you get the lif off? It doesn’t seem to want to move. Is there a knack to it?

Two lift up latches at the back. Force required………

Is it, from the back, push the 2 catches up and pull it towards you?

Lift latch on one side, give lid a thump to the rear, then do the other side.

OK, top and right side panel off now thanks!
I can now see the back end of the motor. What’s the next suggestion?

When I turn the impeller with my fingers from inside the sump, the armature is moving when viewed from the end of the motor, so at least I know the impeller is still connected to the shaft!

When you start a cycle , does the DW fill properly with a full water level and then start to work…or does it immediately mae this noise ?

It could be the motor running ’empty’ if the appliance actually thinks its full of water .

start a new cycle and listen . You should hear it pump out for about 30sec , then fill with water and then start to ‘wash’.

Post here again if any different .

    Hi.
When you push the start button it sounds normal. It pumps out, it fills, and then at the point (about 45 secs at a guess after pressing start) when it normally starts making a steady droning sort of noise when the washing starts, instead I’m getting a sound like a car trying to start. Like a wah waha wah wah noise, much harsher and higher pitched than the normal droning noise.

Once this noise starts , open the door and let us know how much water there is in the bottom of the tub.

Will do. I have to reconnect it first. How much should there be?

When the noise started I opened the door. The water level was barely to the top of the sump. In fact until I took the filter out I couldn’t actually see any water at all. I tipped a couple of jugs of water in (about 6 pints worth) shut the door and pressed start and the noise definitely changed. Does this give us any clues.

Right. Remove the l/h side panel, you’ll find this:

The water level should be halfway up the salt cap, if the unit in the picture and the hose coming out bottom right ard full of congealed goo, it will underfill badly, then strange things happen……….

    Strip and clean; try again.

    Power off first.

The vessel filled with goo in your picture looks ok on mine, but, in the matrix where the water inlet comes in , there is a lot of goo at the top of the pipe. Looks like it needs cleaning out. Have you any tips on how to get it off?
