I noticed a faint burning smell around our dishwasher (it was running happily enough) and stopped it by opening the door – it was in the middle of a program, spraying water about just fine. Undecided, I closed the door – yes, definitely something coming from the machine! However, now it did not look at all happy: basically running the pump continuously, and the top display digits were “all segments on” while the front ones read “1FF” and the pump pumps continuously.

Inspired by earlier success (thanks guys) I whipped the door off and inspected the PCB: no visible problems and no smell from here. Took the side off: no visible problems, but this seems to be the source of the smell (kind of an “electronics” burning smell you know what I mean..).

Any ideas for next move much appreciated!

If the pump is running all the time (I take it that’s the wash pump?) then most likely it’s not heating and therefore not completing the cycle…if you’ve had a good visual check of the pcb and that’s ok then most likely it’s the heater.

The only way to confirm is with a multimeter looking for around 22-23 ohms across it….

Incidentally, the wash pumps do smell a bit if they’ve been working for too long (they are not continuously rated) but it will most likely survive. 😉

I wouldn’t say it was just not completing the cycle. It doesn’t really start. From power on it just:

    – displays all segments and icons in the top display
    – displays “1PP” (not FF as I wrote earlier) in the front display
    – pumps out

It even does this if the door is open.

If the drain pump runs all the time even with the door open that usually means the flood protection has tripped in which case you would have noticed water in the base of the cabinet or the microswitch above the float has stuck.

I’m more concerned about the display though…the Bosch boys on here could tell you if that is an error display or not but to me it doesn’t sound like it in which case the pcb itself is the fault.

I have had one or two where the dispenser has popped the board but these were obvious by the damaged relevant triac on the board 😕

Thanks – how easy is it to replace the main PCB? I mean, physically I can do it no problem – but does it require setting up by a pro, or is it “plug and play”?

And if I do, what is the chance that it is something else (the burning smell wasn’t the PCB) that has fried the PCB – and it’ll just repeat itself?

I’ve checked the motor suppressor, looks ok.
