ParticipantI have the above machine, whose wash quality has been deteriorating gradually to the point that it was totally unacceptable, so I bit the bullet this weekend and took the cover off. The pipework, aquastop chamber and all the floats inside were completely clogged and jammed with black gunge, and having cleaned it all up the machine seems to be working fine again .
The other component completely clogged with the black crap was the large flat translucent component which connects direcly to the mains inlet and drain hose – not sure what it’s called – is it the ‘inlet valve’? anyway the big thing to the left side of this picture (nicked from another forum user, thanks!) I cleaned this as best I could, but much of it was inaccessible despite much soaking, shaking, pratting about with syringes and length of aquarium air-tube. In particular, I couldn’t get at the two little red areas at the top.
Finally the question. What are these red areas, and what do they do? As I say, the machine’s working fine apparently, so I’m wondering how important they are. Any tips for completing the clean-out properly, or would I just have to buy a replacement?
Thanks!

It acts as an ‘air vent valve’ that allows air to enter via the inlet hole (top right hand corner). It would have to be very badly blocked indeed before that system were compromised. Almost impossible to clean, that is true, so many opt to replace that unit instead if necessary.

Thanks for that. So are both of the red things air vent valves?
Incidentally, do all dishwashers get clogged up in this manner, or is this a design flaw of mine? Particularly poor that it’s effectively uncleanable, IMHO. I couldn’t believe the amount of black gunge fouling up the moving parts, and the putrefying smell… is there anything that can be done to prevent recurrence?

No, the one on the extreme left is, the other just a water nozzle.

Many do yes, I’m not familiar with all makes but I suspect as all deal with discharged ‘grey’ waste water, likely as not all suffer.

Yes, there are two ways. One means going to the bother of rinsing all dish ware prior to putting in the dishwasher. That only then adds to the build-up of similar ‘gunge’ in the sink drain. The other is to plumb your machine to a HOT water supply and that will eliminate the problem almost entirely due to the fact that warm/hot waste water is less likely to allow waste fats to congeal in the pipework. The only caution to a hot water system is to ensure the incoming water NEVER goes above 60C. The dishwashers I have owned and operated (my current one is a Bosch) these many years have all been connected to a hot supply with no issues with gunged up pipework or drains. Make of that fact what you will 😉
HTH? 😀
