This is a very integrated old dishwasher.Normally (from past experience) on these, there is a three stage fill and then into the programme. This one on the last test had seven stages and then stopped dead, presumably an anti flood system has come into place.
Water inside is well above the element.
Original customer complaint of sticking on the wash once we’d stepped the programme off fill. 🙄
Puzzled as to why there is more thamn the normal number of fills, what controlls this?Any ideas

You may want to have a look at the timer motor….if its really old then sometimes its just the drive cog on the end of the timer motor which moves along the shaft and no longer makes contact with its neighbour. (carefull tapping back will cure)
The system works by supplying the timer motor when the float is in the ‘cocked’ position….the tank is a fixed volume, its overflow a fixed diameter so therefore the tank will drain at a fixed rate i.e. the same length of time each time it drains. Three times that time is enough to step the timer on to the next stage, so the timer rolls on just before the third tankfull finishes going in giving the correct volume of water in the tub.

No probs….as an after thought, i’ve seen a few with the harness broken in the door….the feed wires to the float are a common suspect there. Also a leaking rinse-aid dispenser can get to the wiring where it touches it, or may be just a plain old knackered float switch?

Been back to this one today armed with CJ’s info and fault immediately apparent. The return from the microswitch had melted into the tar on the door. Looked ok at first glance but the pull test proved the fault 😉 .
Thanks Mr Jameson.
