Strange problem…..
Called out for fault code relating to the base being full of water. On arrival, it was clear there had been some water in the base but the machine showed no signs of leak or overfill bar small trace marks near the motor / heater unit. Flowmeter seemed OK and all other seals looked fine.
I then tested for earth faults and found the motor / heater unit had a substantial fault from the earth connector on the heater terminal block to the machine body when all wires were disconnected. No earth wires at all connected yet faulting. 😯
Checked the heater and motor separately and the loom for earth faults – nothing. How is it possible for a part to earth leak when not connected to anything? Is it possible for these motor / heater units to leak water at all? I can only assume the earth fault from the earth tag on the motor to the body of the machine is via the water left inside the machine. Stumped…… 👿Anyone help please?
Thanks,
Steve.

Can you explain your earth fault again as the way I read it was you tested from the earth on the heater to the metal cabinet ?

I disconnected the heater and motor plugs and the earth tag on the motor was well under 1 meg to body earth. Now considering the earth wire for the motor is the end tag in the heater plug, it shows no leak to the stator coil of the motor. The heater likewise has no earth fault. But with all the wiring disconnected from the motor heater unit and no sign of any other metal connection, my insulation meter shows a fail from the earth tag to the body only. Weird….or is it conducting through the water left in the motor heater? I can’t find anything obviously leaking water into the base, so can these motor units leak?
Hope that helps!!
Cheers,
Steve.

Have you tried reconnecting everything and switching it on? What happens?

Thanks for the reply. I reconnected the motor and it all seemed to work. The strange thing is that the machine seems to work OK and to add insult to injury, there was no sign of any water leak from the components at all. The original fault was “water in the base / float switch activated” fault. When I first visited and tested it, the flowmeter filled correctly; motor ran; heater ran; basically it all worked fine. There had been water in the base tray and there were still places in the tray that were wet. The earth fault started as a side issue but doing some research I found references to earth problems causing havoc with the PCB – especially overfilling – hence looking at all possibilities.
I think I’m going to pull it in the workshop for observation as I am so overwhelmed with work ATM that it is either that or I turn it away.
Would really like to fix it just to find out…… 😈Cheers
Steve.

I would put it back together, run it through a quick cycle, then PAT test it, if it passes you can do no more, you have determined that the earth is present znd the safety devices work so rest easy.
