ParticipantAfter turning on the machine, I hear the motor running for about half a minute but then it stops and the cycle doesn’t advance. I don’t think any water has been taken in. It’s an old machine but if it’s a simple repair I’d be interested in sorting it – any help greatly appreciated

Broken wiring in hinge pivot, failed inlet valve or solidified softener unit are the most likely problems.
Power off if you’re going in.

Thanks for your reply.
I’ve checked the wiring loom and no fault found. The machine washed & drained when water added manually but then the programme didn’t advance again. Does that give you any further clues or do I check your other suggestions? CheersMarch 4, 2010 at 12:20 am #313731Penguin45

Machine fills from a metering tank on the rear of the cavity. Remove left hand side panel to see what is going on. The water level in the tank is reflected in the water level in the rear-most column of the water matrix. If it’s empty, the tank is not filling, which would point to a water valve problem. If the tank is full, but it’s not draining down into the machine, the relese solenoid at the bottom of the matrix may have failed. If the water level drops slightly then slows, the softener unit may have gummed up. This is the “sandbox” in the matrix.

Thanks again. The rear most column has very little water in it so I guess i need to check the inlet valve – can you advise on getting at it please

You won’t like it very much…. The plastic tray hinges from the back – release a couple of screws in the front corners and the base will swing down. The valve is on the left, just inside the water matrix. Access is very tight, but you’re looking for 3.5 – 4 kOhms resistance across the solenoid coil on a working unit.

You’re right – I don’t like it. I do appreciate your help though. “Something for the weekend” always meant something else in my younger days! I’ll let you know how I get on. Thanks again

Hi Penguin45 again – i wimped out over the weekend but am back on it now. Before I possibly go barking up the wrong tree, can I check something with you? Whilst the rearmost column (about an inch wide and running down to the bottom of the matrix) has little water, the adjacent 4 columns (about 4 inches wide in total) are full. Have I identified the correct column that suggests the possible faulty inlet valve do you think? Thanks again!

Correct – the water held in the matrix is released into the softener unit later in the programme.

Hi Penguin45 again, i’m back on it! Well I have an inlet valve resistance of 4kohms, so I’m afraid i’m stuck again. Also, I did remove a small plastic pipe entering the rear of the matrix about a third up (presumably from the tank) and that was dry so i guess i haven’t dismissed a tank filling problem – anything else that could be going on? Also, I notice, there is some water in the rearmost column of the matrix down towards the ‘sandbox’ (brown granular area) to a height of about 4 inches but it doesn’t move when the machine is switched on. Cheers again.

Ok, there are two release solenoids at the bottom of the fill matrix – the lowermost one (from memory) allows the water to run through the sand box and into the machine. Same procedure, you should get a resistance reading through the coil. When activated, you can usually hear a gentle humming noise. If you do, and the level doesn’t drop, the sand box will have solidified.
To deal with that eventuality, take a plastic handled screwdriver and gently and persistantly tap the sand box area – eventually the sludge breaks up and the water will start to flow.
Can you get on with this? People are starting to talk….. 😆

Ha!
Well, I’ve done all of the above but no obvious fault found. Now, for some reason it’s working again. This follows laying the m/c on it’s back for a final nose around before lobbing it -I don’t know if that did anything. Regardless, when it stops next time, its old and it gets replaced – it’s already almost cost me one relationship. Then again…I started another. 😉 Many thanks, over and out. -
