ParticipantHi All,
Bosch SRS43C32GB/01
Just had an “interesting” time at the Mother in laws holiday house, full of gusto that the filter in the water supply line was probably blocked as the machine was only 2 1/2 years old (yes just out of warranty, good oh!).
Turned out to be water literally running out of the seal 171598. I found this by filling the sump with water and looking with a torch, it was leaking really badly without the machine even being turned on.
After working out how to take it apart with the aid of the parts list, I’m reluctant to change just this seal then have to pull it all apart again sometime soon.
The bottom of the circulation pump looks a bit mucky so I’m wondering whether I should change anything else while I’m there? To complicate matters the machine is in France but I’ve bought the Sump/Circulation pump/Heater assembly back to change any bits I need to in my workshop where I have access to more tools.
Does anyone know what causes a failure of this seal? Have they been improved?
Any advice gratefully received!
Cheers Gareth

Detergent degradation affects the seal eventually and has not been improved or modified since production. The main Impeller seal (impeller kit) fails far more often so you may wish to check that especially if there are water marks from the drive shaft.

Thanks Martin,
I think I’ll put an impeller kit in as well then. Quite odd that this should go as the machine is only 2 1/2 years old and not used very much (as I say installed in a holiday home). I have been careful to use the function to pump it out to prevent frost damage in the winter, perhaps we should do this after every time someone visits to prevent anything being left in the sump.
Is it normal practise to install these seals with some silicone grease or anything else of that nature?
I’ll pull the motor off tomorrow and clean it up at work to check that it is still servicable.
Cheers again.

You don’t usually need silicone grease as they fit easily enough but it wouldn’t harm to do so. As far as ‘over wintering’ goes then long periods of being dormant can make the shaft seals stick on the shaft and friction, on restarting, can be damaging. Likewise the salt within the softener system left for extended periods can be quite corrosive. 🙁
