ParticipantMy 2 year old machine has just made a horrid grinding noise at the end of its programme. It carries on making the noise even after the “end” light has come on. When opening the machine there is an odd smell which I can’t quite put my finger on and everything in the machine is still wet although the cavity is empty of water.
I have checked for debris in the filter and given it a good clean “just in case” but as soon as I turn it on I just get the noise again and the programme doesn’t actually start.
Any ideas? My extended warranty ran out last month and I turned down renewal as they wanted over £200!!! Typical 🙂

I would suspect that the base tray under the machine is flooded. There is a float operated flood protection mechanism in the base. If the base floods, it operates the drain pump and over-rides the programming. If left to run for extended periods the drain pump will wear and become noisy.
Pulling the dishwasher (and the plug) out and tipping the machine flat to the floor on one side will drain the water out and reset things. However, if the problem recurs, you will have to find the leak and resolve it. If it’s a straightforward one, you should consider getting the drain pump replaced at the same time.

Thanks Penguin! I pulled the machine out of it’s hole but haven’t tipped it over so will try that tonight.

No! No! Tip it on its back for heavens sake otherwise you could flood the electrics and next time you plug it in a large pop followed by smoke will greet you. 🙁

Tipping it on its back will run water into the mains suppressor.

Thanks for your advice. We finally got around to pulling the machine right out at the weekend and there was truly tiny amount of water in the base of the machine – two sheets of “bounty” completely cleared it. The machine then worked just fine for two cycles and then started doing the same thing again.
No water in the base of the machine at all this time.
Any other ideas?
