ParticipantThought I would share this with you all. Got a call to this machine, the fault tripping the electrics. Heater fault I thought and after a quick test this was proved correct so fitted new and put m/c through a wash. All good and left ( after getting paid of course)
A day later she calls me again, it’s tripping electrics again. I go back all test fine but during the heat phase trips electrics. So strip out and inspect only to find a nice grove in the element. It appears bearings are failing and on fast spin tub is hitting heater. Rotating the tub didn’t give an indication of failure.
Shame I didn’t notice any witness marks on the old element. On to watch out for.

If you remove the belt and then spin the drum the drum will rotate in an orbit like Venus around the Sun……. 😛

The bearings could be sound but I bet the drum spider isn’t!
Same thing happens often on the old WM range of Hotpoints.

As a test I set a spin going. Quite until it hit 1200 then had to shut down as really started to knock.

Worst offenders to drum spigot breaking up are the Bosch WAA series with the welded tub.

I now own this machine. (Sold them a new Amica W/M that I had on the van.) I’ll update what I find when I strip it down.

Another reason they weld the tubs up. So we can’t see what rubbish they’re putting inside.

is it just me or do you other guys find that when a drum spider breaks its usually after prolonged use of liquid detergent. it seems to cause osteoporosis. from what i can make out they need approx four to five years of liquid usage.

I think there’s a general consensus round here that low temperature washes are implicated. Maybe liquid detergents are made to work at low temperatures more than old style powders are. I almost always find the structure completely caked in obnoxious goo when it’s broke. Whereas when doing a bearing change in a machine getting regular hot washes I find a much cleaner metal surface and no deterioration. Microbes are very happy living at 40 deg. (I wouldn’t mind it too much myself. Maybe won’t have long to wait.) And setting up home in the nooks and crannies of the spider is ideal for them. Regular doses of lovely life-sustaining Ecover to eat plus minimum twice-weekly bathing in the warm swimming tub. Life’s a beach for them, and no mistake!
