    Hi.

Bosch WAE24166GB/06 has a cracked spider. The FD number is 9105 so from searching I believe that it is a May 2011 model. I brought it off ebay around July 2012 from a woman who has moved house with integrated appliances, hence the eBay sale.

It’s done well and I would have no problems in getting new machine if needed but I would rather not condemn the old one if it is economical to repair.

I can get a new drum for £126 and this site lists a Spider for around £45 that although does not list my machine number as compatible, it does list another machine number which the Drum is compatible with.

The big dilemma I am in is will it be worth shelling out the £126 for the drum or dumping the machine buying a new one?

The Whitegoods Spider although not certain to fit, is also being quoted as 15-60 day delivery and the Mrs will not put up with no machine that long !!!

John Lewis sell Bosch Washing machines that meet my needs for as little as £320 now and that seems very cheap for a Bosch machine.

Are the Bosch machines down in the budget basement now? I was always led to believe that they at least Mid-range models but the prices now seem to have them down in the Beko / WhiteKnight range.

I would hate to replace the drum, only for something else to go wrong and I know that is a risk but nearly all machines only have a 2 year warranty which seems rather short for what I thought was a mid-range brand. Are new Bosch machines crapper than when this one was made in 2011?

    Any advice welcome.

    Drum for yours is here

    https://www.bosch-home.co.uk/supportdetail/product/WAE24166GB/06#/Tabs=section-spareparts/

at £127 it’s hard to know it it’s worth it

also may have damaged the heater as it failed

no Bosch is not what it was, closest to you machine is the WAN range

Yeah, that’s the dilemma, fit the drum and the programmer packs up in 3 months…..

The heater looks ok but I’ll put a meter across it tomorrow to be sure.

more worried about the drum scoring the heater that gives it an earth fault and blows the house trip

programmers are pretty reliable but to fit the drum you also need a seal kit (416886 £17.87) also includes screw to re secure drum as you have to snap plastic clips to get it apart. Also while your in there i would fit a new water seal on the drum shaft (613082 £5.12)

    All adds up

“John Lewis sell Bosch Washing machines that meet my needs for as little as £320 now and that seems very cheap for a Bosch machine.” Yes it is but it will have a sealed tank unit so if your bearings fail you have 2 choices 1) a complete replacement tank or 2) scrapping it!

“Are new Bosch machines crapper than when this one was made in 2011?” Yes and by a large margin. I am not a fan of Bosch, Neff, or Siemens stuff anymore. Whether a sealed tanked model which these days are by far more common than the few remaining ( last time I looked ) machines that are dismantleable tanked, either way the costs of repair can be rather horrific.

“the prices now seem to have them down in the Beko / WhiteKnight range.” Beko are sealed tanked, White knight is a Vestel machine made in Turkey which does have a tank you can dismantel ….that`s if you can get the parts AND at a reasonable price!

If I was in your shoes for around 300/325 quid why not consider a Zanussi Lindo 300 model. 8kg and 1400 spin. The only common problem, so far, is heater failure ( goes to earth, trip seldom goes off but it temporarily scrambles the programmer giving you the impression that the expensive pcb is at fault as the display fails or it starts filling and generally does really weird things ) once you know the fault £30 odd quid fixes it. Sealed tank though and @ £200 if it goes!

Failing that you could always as pointed out get a new drum with spider ( you cannot buy a spider separate ) and change the oil seal on your existing machine, trouble is, as you yourself point out,…what`ll be next?
