ParticipantHi Guys,
A bit of advice regarding a BOSCH WAE2446BGB/10 that has worn Drum bearings. The machine itself is almost 10 years old and has performed faultlessly in all that time, but alas after 10 years of Stirling service, we are now looking at replacing the Drum Bearings. How do we know, when on a wash cycle, the machine will start to do the spin cycle and the noise coming from the machine is that horrible scrapping, knock knock sound so reminiscent of the bearings failing. Also, moving the drum backwards and forwards, there is a lot of play in the drum and you can hear it knocking as its being rocked.
My question is, is this a job that is worth doing on this model? Is it something that can be down diy style, or is this a call a pro in job. How many hours work is involved? I have tracked down the bearings set for about £50 – £60 online.
If it is deemed uneconomical to repair, then we would be looking at a new washing machine to which I ask, would you look at an LG or Hoover machine? We currently have a Hoover Dryer which works perfectly, so a Hoover washing machine would fit in nicely, but my mind says an LG will be a better bet. We would be looking at sending between £400 – £500 for a new machine, oh an because of the other half it needs to be black (don’t ask).
However, it maybe deemed reasonable to replace the bearings in the Bosch and keep with that for a few more years yet, to which I would like to ask, is there anyone around the Spalding/Kings Lynn area who would be able to complete this task (if its deemed to much for a diy repair). To be honest, after the abomination that was a Hotpoint (long story, but I was on UKWhitegoods back in 2007-2008 talking about this) the Bosch has been a breath of fresh air.
Your thoughts on this would be appreciated.
Cheers

bearing kit
https://shop.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/172686- … earing-kitit is a fairly big job as the tub has to come out and all the plastic lugs holding the tub together have to be broken off and replaced with the screws provided if there is up and down play in the drum you need to strip it to look for damage to the drum spider before you order parts

Hi Dave,
Yes, sorry for that. When I posted it on Google Chrome it returned an error so I tried again on IE not realising it had already posted.
Ok, just checked the drum. If i grab it from the bottom and wiggle it backwards and forwards, there is definitely movement on the bearings i.e the drum can be felt and heard moving. I then pushed the drum at the top and again you can feel the drum moving, not much but there is definite movement both backwards and forwards and up and down. All right, not very scientific and as you say, probably needs a stip down to check whats going on.
Is this a machine that is worth resurrecting? Is it a german or spanish made machine. I remember paying upwards of £500 for it nearly 10 years ago in the hope it was a German machine.
Would we be better cutting our loses, and looking at an LG or Hoover machine in its place? The place we can purchase washing machines only sell Hotpoint, Beko, LG & Hoover Machines. I’m not counting the Russell Hobbs or White Knight Machines in this list.

its one of those questions you cant answer easily and a lot depends on the condition of the spider(drum carrier). The spiders can corrode over time and if you need to replace that as well then its not worth it. Other than that if its just the bearings it probably is. I would also check the motor brushes when its apart but the rest of the machine is very reliable but there are no promises.
If it were me and I got a machine like this if it was just the bearing I would recon it and sell it as chances are it will not cause a problem when its done but its a chanceDave
