ParticipantAn ongoing saga regarding our WAQ28460GB/01 smelling badly.
From what i’ve read elsewhere it’s not an uncommon problem when running 40 degree washes with non-bio liquid tabs – Fairy at present (No option to change as my kids have sensitive skin)
However i’ve tried everthing to try and get rid of the smell, usual stuff – detergent drawer cleaned, filter cleaned, door seal cleaned, regular hot washes. I’ve used Affresh tablets amongst other, i’ve used Bosch washer cleaner…and bleach.
Most recently i removed the outlet hose from the tub to the pump (Quite a bit or residue cleaned out)…and also fully removed the drain hose and flushed that…all to no avail, within days it began smelling again!.
Does anyone have any other suggestions?, i’m under pressure from SWMBO (she who must be obeyed) to get a new washer, but i fear the same will happen again…and apart from the smell it’s working fine. Thanks in anticipation!…

If that’s the way the machine is being used, swapping it will give a temporary reprieve but, it will return on the new one as well.
But I cannot understand how on Earth using liquitabs is any different from anything else as, it’s the same basic components in them as it is for powder other than bleach.
Using liquids all the time, no bleaching action so bacteria will build up in the machine without a shadow of doubt and just build and build as there’s nothing to control it.
Skin problems due to the detergent then become the least of your problems as you end up washing in a soup of bacteria and old dirt, hardly what I’d say could be considered to be healthy or hygienic.

The problem is that i cannot readily change the way we use it. i.e Low temp washes using non bio detergent, however we do also run regular high temp washes for towels etc
Frustratingly we also do weekly maintenance washes using bleach….but nothing seems to keep the smell at bay.
I was pretty dissapointed how quickly the smell returned, after deep cleaning the pipes.
I have little only option but to try and convince Mrs B to change her detergent to something with a bleaching action…but i’ve already been down that road and failed.
She’s convinced it is the machine, but as you stated and I concur that problem will just reappear, unless there are machines on the market that are less susseptible to bacterial build up when using non biological products.December 1, 2016 at 4:16 pm #443271Martin

So called skin allergies were extremely rare instances years ago when washing machines filled with water, water you could see when it washed. These days clothes seem to wash in a mixture of soap bubbles and yuck from the previous wash cycles. Even during the rinse cycles those bubbles seem never to disappear. So our kids put on clothing that hasn’t truly been washed and certainly not rinsed. Kids sweat and nasty skin rashes and itching suddenly becomes commonplace.
Folks resort to all kinds of short term cures, the first of which is switching from a bio to a non-bio detergent……..WRONG! The vital ingredient in washing any garment at temperatures below 60 degs is enzymes. Without them all manner of problems result especially so if you don’t set the machine on the correct program for the fabric, overdose on detergent, turn the temperature down more or worse still use a quick wash cycle.
Bleach and enzymes wash the clothes and ensure the machine stays clean, clear and odour free for the most part. You have to do your bit in sticking to the manufacturers operating instructions, sort your fabrics out and use good quality detergent.
As for skin allergies, ask your doctor to arrange for a ‘patch test’ at your local hospitals dermatology department if you ever suspect an allergic reaction to bleach based/biological detergent. Or another brilliant cure all to sensitive skin is moisturiser. Got an itch?….slap on some moisturiser.
Finally, your machine sounds so bad that only taking it apart and jet washing the inner drum and tub will cure. But based on current operating trends will return (Probably around 6 months time?) 🙁

Depends how much laundry you’re doing to a degree but, with the use it’s going to get bad and it will happen regardless of what machine you use.

Afraid not, they all operate to HLCC guidelines and as it’s down to use, as I’ve said, no machine will escape from the problem you’ve got. Degrees of severity perhaps if you buy a machine with a stainless tank but about the only way to get that now (maybe) is a commercial machine or perhaps a top end Miele.
So, that’s gonna run you a couple of grand with no guarantee it won’t fall prey to exactly the same issue.
In any event, this will not be covered by any warranty as it’s use related so it’d be a lot of money to take a punt that it might work or, might not.
