I have just got back from a very large private estate, the kind of area where very rich people live.

During the visit, I attended a call out to a Bosch washer with the description of fault saying the machine won’t stop washing and the rinse is very poor. The machine is four years old by the way. She was very proud of it, saying it was her second Bosch machine, the first one lasted 14 years with no trouble. She asked if she made a wise choice on the second one – I didn’t have the heart to tell her the truth.

When I looked at the machine, the door seal was thick in black mould so I said new door seal required then I moved on trying to establish why the machine was not completing the wash cycle. I selected the program for 30 deg wash to get the feel of what is happening, the display says 1 hour 15 mins cycle time. I let it run for 15 mins while I was chatting to the client over a freshly ground coffee, she got fine taste in coffee, the machine performs as it was suppose to do. Common sense prevail…I decided that I do not want to watch the machine going through the cycle for 1 hr 15 mins, so I changed the selector (of course I drained the water, etc), I selected for rinse cycle (15 mins cycle) the longest 15 mins of my life.

During the fifteen minutes or so, I noticed that she was using supermarket’s own liquid capsule, she complained of poor washing results, I learnt that she regularly used the 30deg wash but the washing packet says not suitable for wash below 40 deg. perhaps that explains the poor washing results and the mouldy door. I explained to her that she is to select the 40 deg from now on but it wasn’t easy to convince her.

During that converstation, the machine completed the 15 mins cycle – I thought so far so good. I then advised her to carry out a hot wash say once a month to keep the gunk at bay, but she got into a discussion on how it was wasteful to do hot wash on empty load. I knew that I wasn’t going to win on that one so I made a mental note to get machine cleaner and charge her a fortune for it.

She insisted that the machine does not complete the wash cycle, I tried three programs and they all completed the cycle. I then pulled the plug out to power down the washer in the hope that the computer will reset. I asked her to do a normal wash at 40 deg and give me a call if it does not finish the wash.

I am left thinking that the program board is the culprit but looking at the price of £137 plus VAT plus the door seal which is going to cost her a small three figure sum.

From what I gathered on some forum posts that this particular Bosch machine is a problematic when it comes to programing fault which is common.

How do I confirm that it is the program fault?
