ParticipantHave brush motor fitted new new brushes when I run it to bench test run ok clockwise when run anticlock wise it is sparking and making a crackling noise .
Removed brushes and checked only half of the brushes making contact on commutator would that be the reason for the sparking.
Don’t want to fry pcb when reinstalled what should I be checking on machine for damage after motor heater door switch wiring thanks fasetester

Cheapy pattern brushes are they fase? Or are you running that motor flat out?

The lamnated Martin testing motor with no speed control is that the reason for sparking

Brushes have to be ‘run in’ for a period at low speeds. 800 rpm drum speeds ideal.

been having problems with non gen brushes for a while
I now take the rear edge off the brush with sand paper before fitting otherwise the brush only contacts at the rear causing sparking
after fitting I run the brush to 800 or 1000 spin and listen in case one of them need a bit more off
after fitting I tell the customer to avoid heavy loads of towels and use 800 spin for 10 washes followed by 1000 for the next 5 to give bed in time
never had a board blow because of it

I only use gen brushes and charge the correct price for them. 😉

Bed them in using com stick
Always do this with any brushes when fitting and never had any problems except when com is on way outJune 28, 2017 at 9:39 am #448493iadom

Found the thick brown comm stick hard to find and the white chalky one to brittle, end up with several small useless pieces.
Have been using THIS recently and it cleans the comm really well. 8)

Well I’ve fitted a pair of cbn2222 on a wae28364 tonight and they sound better than the originals do

Thanks for all the replys when bench testing motor without speed control is there any way of controlling the speed of the motor to bed in brushes putting a load in the circuit .
And if I wanted to test pcb on the connections to motor which terminals should I get a reading on on the PCB and what resistance should I get and has any one built a basic speed controller to control motor speed so I can run the motor at a wash speed thanks fasetester

Bench testing motors is pretty much a waste of time as the motor needs to be under load to check correctly especially when it comes to running in new brushes. Bench testing flat out and most motors will spark like a Roman candle with new brushes in.
Com sticks sort out the commutator only whereas carbons may need extra TLC to ensure even contact with the com. A fine curved-toothed file perfect for those jobs.
As has been said earlier, genuine brushes are by far the best fit and much less likely to sparkle 😀

used to bed in some of the old hoover motors with a car battery charger. wired up arm and field in series and connect. you can run for a few hours that way cant over speed at that voltage

Any one build there own test bench with speed control I know you can buy speed controls what about testing the motor block connector on the PCB what reading should I get and what range should be used thanks fasetester

Not sure about Martin but in all my long, nay very long time in the trade I have never ever ‘bench tested’ any motors.

No me neither, no point whatsoever. The only exception is workshop repairs to vacs, fan heaters, hair dryers and the odd tumble dryer. But then I, like Jim am old school 😉
But these days there must be hoards of Ebayers reclaiming motors from scrap machines, reconning them and ‘bench testing’ them, somehow, and knocking them out cheap. :rolls:
