Participanthave an almost 3 year old machine. over the last couple of weeks when we do a hot wash it develops a very strong fish smell. It does not appear to come from the drum (we have taken the detergent tray out to smell the washing.. it perhaps smells like very hot insulation. Anyone any ideas as to what might be happening. Machine still works fine. Thanks

ModeratorHave you had a close look at the mains plug and wall socket?

ParticipantThanks very much for the speedy reply and suggestion. Have checked plug and socket – including wiring behind . – no signs of overheating or scorching. Might it be the motor? I think this model is a direct drive.

ModeratorMore likely to be a loose contact somewhere. After the mains plug the next possible suspects are the terminal block where the mains cable enters the machine just inside the cabinet and the wiring connections to the heater.

ParticipantThanks for the fast response – will take a look – Why would this only small with hot washes?

ModeratorHeavy current being drawn for a longer period causing overheating at loose connections.

ParticipantHave had back off no signs of anything looking cooked. wiring to element seems fine – can not sense any residual small either.. will watch more closely next time we run a wash to see if we can get closer to the issue. Thanks for your input – much appreciated. One discovery I have made is that this is not a direct drive washing machine!

ModeratorLG the main users of direct drive, nothing at all wrong with a belt drive.;) TBH the mains plug is the most common cause of this type of smell, have you got another socket nearby you can try it in?

ParticipantThanks for feedback I have a heavy extension lead I could try from another socket. The plug is moulded onto the cable – but I can see no signs of overheating. Nevertheless will try your suggestions next time we do a hot wash. Thanks again for your time.
