ParticipantHello,
I hope you can help with the problem I am having with my washing machine. The wash cycle starts, continues as normal for 5 minutes or so and then freezes – with the start light on. After this has happened nothing works even if I power cycle it. We have cleaned the filter and checked the hoses. Any other ideas gratefully received.
Many thanks,

A long wait since Nov last year….not much info to go on.
What else does the machine do? ….does it spin or drain…does it only happen
into the wash cycle etc
Have you perhaps tried a cold wash only to eliminate the heater?
The machine is over 20 years old so it may be time to move on…April 17, 2010 at 12:29 am #302393Penguin45

The fault description describes what happens on a wash programme, as far as I can tell. If the programme is cancelled and spin or drain is selected, does that programme complete? Do any of the rinse programmes function?
At five minutes into the programme, the machine may still be looking to top up the water level on a larger load (water valve problem, perhaps?) or bring the heater on to heat the load. A failed element, or one leaking to earth can cause some very strange symptoms.
At 11 years old, the motor will almost certainly be due a new pair of carbon brushes – again, if they’re worn, electrical noise can cause havoc with the pcb.
You will need a test meter to do the basic circuit testing and preferably a Megger for the earth leakage checks on both the heater and the motor; as well as the knowledge to use them correctly. We will not walk you through the processes involved.

When set to any regular wash programme the machine appears to start as normal (flashing red start button indicator, that turns solid red when button is pressed to start the cycle). If the drum is empty (no water), the machine fills, then agitates for about 5 mins before stopping with no other indications (no noises, error lights, smoke etc). If the machine is restarted with the drum full of water, it does not attempt fill again, but agiates for 5 mins before stopping with no other indications. On manually draining, the water appears to be warm.
None of the other programs, such as rinse, work. The start button indicator is either on or off (not flashing), and pressing start has no effect.
The following have been tested: hot and cold feed solenoid valves; waste pump motor (was also replaced 12 months ago); continuity of wiring to mainboard; mainboard relays; visual inspection of connectors and wires – no corrosion or chafing.
Interestingly, have *not* tested the heating element yet, as was stumped by the bundle of wires running from mainboard to the back of drum. Any guidance on testing this would be warmly welcomed!
Appreciate that the machine is very long in the tooth, but financially constrained for the next few months, so need to eke out a few more washes with the old-timer if possible…
Many thanks.

Have you tried the suggestion above of running a cold wash to eliminate the heater?
Don’t be fooled by the water being warm, this could be from your normal hot water supply.

Thanks for your response. Yes, we have tried a cold wash and it does the same thing. Any more help gratefully received.
