My seven-year-old machine has started making an enormous noise when the drum is turning. Is it possible there is something stuck under the drum or have the bearings gone? Any help/pointers greatly appreciated before I lob out a fortune to get it fixed/replaced.

If when you turn the drum slowly by hand it is a metallic rubbing sound, then its likely a bra wire has caught between the inner and outer drum (can be spotted using a torch usually)

If the noise happens just whilst its draining, then the is a coin or something rattling in the pump?

Noisy on fast spin only?…Drum bearings gone!

    Hope that helps ?

Thanks for your reply, Martin. When I turn the drum slowly by hand there is a noise that could possibly be a bra wire stuck although I can’t see anything. It’s definitely not a rattle. Does the fact that I can hear the noise when turning it by hand mean it’s unlikely to be the bearings or is that still a possibility?

Almost certain to be a bra wire then (assuming that type of garment was likely to have been added to the washload at some stage?). No easy answer to its removal other than advising you contact a local engineer to extract it for you (not an expensive procedure really). 😀

Thanks…is it not advisable to try removing it ourselves then? If for example, we were to remove the back of the machine, would we be able to access the drum and extract the bra wire or whatever is causing the noise?

No! The inner drum is inside a tub that holds the water. It’s very hard to get into. 🙁
