    Hi there<

I have a problem with my washing machine. The machine has in the past failed to pump out the water at the end of the cycle but now it constantly fails to do so. I have checked that the filter is clear and unblocked. When the machine fails to empty the rinse and spin/pump lights flash intermittently – does this indicate a fault with the pump? if so any idea how much a new pump would cost, I have a friend who could fit it for me. Do you think it’s worth replacing a pump on a machine of this age?

Any help gratefully received, thank you.

If you take off the filter cap you should be able to see the pump impeller. If you then select a drain programme you can observe if it turns. If it can be turned readily by hand but won’t turn by itself you can then remove the cabinet front and check the resistance of the pump motor windings. If the windings are burnt out you get infinity ohms, if OK expect about 100 ohms. As usual, unplug machine before removing panels.

Thank you for your advice. I have checked and the pump impeller turns when I select a drain-programme. Does this mean that it is not a problem with the pump?

You do sometimes get a lazy pump that works sometimes and not always but you need to check the plumbing before and after the pump for blockages. If the drain hose plugs onto a conical fitting on the sink trap you should start by checking that for blockage. Similarly there could be a sock or something caught in the hose from the tub to the pump / filter housing.
