Bosch WFK5730 Washig Machine Spins for 5seconds only

Guys,
My 15yr old Bosch Washing machine has developed its first fault, I set the normal wash program (yes with a dial), and when the spin is meant to well SPIN it quickly spins the clothes for about 5 seconds then it just spins down
The dial iteself turns as normal so it advances thru the various stages of the wash .
Dirty water pumps out fine too.
Ive cleaned the drain filter at the front, (found 2p coin), also opened the back and checked for blockages in the pipe leading to the front filter and other to the waste pipe.
All seems ok
Had a engineer come round and he reckons its the PCB board (assume thats the one on the drum) and he reckons £200 odd for a PCB+labour.

just want a 2nd opinion – Im guessing could it be the carbon brushes as they have never been changed on this washing machine and a lot of searching on this site seems to point to that??
Anyone got any ideas.

If it’s a brush motor then it won’t hurt to change the brushes to start off & then go from there. Did the Engineer do any Checking / Testing before coming to his conclusion ?

Hi, i wasnt around but im told he spent 30mins, phone his local store which rang Bosch and they said £150ish for the pcb + labour

How do i tell if it has a brush motor – suppose im going to have to open it and have a look – no harm as it not working anyway – would this not be a symptom of carbon brushes which arecirca £3-4

Hiya: Just checked for you & your machine does have a Universal motor.
The Carbon brushes are available from the shop@ link to the left, the part number is BS12102 Priced at £9.14 which is a good price for retail.

PLEASE REMEMBER POWER OFF & PLUG OUT BEFORE ATTEMPTING REPAIR, SO YOU DON’T END UP GETTING 😯 😯

ok thanks – do you reckon the issue im having can be worn carbon brushes as your saying worn brush motor which i belive is something else?

A Brush Motor is simply a Universal motor which has carbon brushes fitted to it. i.e the motor in your Bosch washing machine & they can and do cause the problem you reported.
Can I say definitively that the Brushes are gone in your machine & causing the fault then no I can’t, I haven’t seen or tested your machine.
I just gave you an informed opinion based on 19 years trade experience.

Let me ask a question that hasnt been asked yet… before this 5 second spin only… have the clother been coming out quite wet lately before this fault your describing?.. i.e… not as dry as they used to be?

no i dont htink the clothes have been coming out wetter than normal – however just 20mins before the fault happended
I was told that the machine seemed noisy, banging around, but when i went to have a look, al i saw was machine spining for 5 seconds thats all no more banging or shaking

If the motor is turning at all then it’s unlikely to be just the brushes. Check it on the wash part of the cycle and see if it does the 5 second spin when it should be tumbling. If it does then its lost control of the motor, which will mean either pcb or motor fault. If it’s tuming normally on wash but only for 5 seconds on spin then it could be the brushes but more likely the pcb. My opinion, at 15 years old its done better than most and it’s time for the big scrapheap in the sky.

If i had a machine that give me 1 fault after 15 years of service… i would be “personally” inclined to have this fixed tbh.

Cheers guys will look at the machine again , yes it only spins for about 5 seconds then stops spinning, gerenally when its owrking it would spin for 10mins on the final spin.
So looks like i could be looking at carbon brushes, PCB or motor fault,
And yes the only thing i ever replace on the washing machine was the door seals, nothing else ever

The 5 second spin that the appliance does….is it a fairly quick whizz round , like a sudden start rather than a controlled start to the spin?
The problem could be the tacho on the motor not sending a signal to the PCB. I’ve seen this a couple of times.
