ParticipantHi,
My old faithful washing machine (Bosch WFO2464GB) has been making grinding noises while spinning, however things have got worse!
Today when I used it, I found the washing was very wet at the end of the cycle so I put it on to rinse & spin again and found that the drum is not turning.
Water & powder etc are coming in to the machine & it seems to be progressing through the cycle to finish but without the drum turning.
Can anybody suggest a cause for this? We can have a pretty good go at a repair if we have a diagnosis!
I’m keen to mend it if possible because it’s always been a great washing machine & as it’s a Bosch I had expected a few more years out of it yet. Also, I simply can’t afford to go out & buy a new one!
With many thanks,

ParticipantThe most probable cause is the brushes in the motor….especially if the lack of drum rotation is seemingly the only prob.
When you say it was a grinding noise , would a crackling/scraping noise be more accurate ?
Motor will need to be removed to check brush wear which , when new , would be approx 5 cm long. If they’ve worn right down i.e anything less than approx 0.75cm then replacing them would be the first port of call.
Power off if investigating

Hi,
Thanks for your reply.
The noise the machine has been making happens when the drum is turning during the wash part of the cycle & also especially when it is spinning. It sounds like a metal grinding on metal type of noise. It’s very hard to describe now I can’t listen to it!
We can try to look at the brushes this weekend but are not 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} sure what they look like! Is there anywhere I can find a photo of what the brushes look like?
Thanks again 🙂

Article on motor brushes HERE.
I suspect you need to remove the rear cover of the machine – you’ll probably find that the belt is off because the drum bearings have collapsed and the pulley is no longer running parallel to the motor.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply Penguin45. I’ve had a good look at both of those articles & while I think we could manage the brushes, I’m not at all confident about changing drum bearings – are they difficult to do on these Bosch machines? We have only a basic level of DIY as far as these things are concerned.
Is this likely to be an expensive job if I call out an engineer? It sounds like it would take a lot of time which is where I expect it would get pricey.
The machine has been well looked after but I have had it about 6-7 years & use it a lot (2 washes most days). Is this an acceptable life for one of these machines?
Thanks again for all your help,
shiny_shark 🙂

Did you check whether the belt was on or off?
Drum bearings are an absolute cow on one of these – it’ll take a repairer two hours. No particular special tools required, but a lot of hard physical work involved.
