ParticipantFrom my last post a long time ago I’m now a dab hand at replacing brushes, in fact a bit of a whizz……
But replaced brushes last week – usual suspect one brush worn right down, other one halfway. Machine worked fine but 7 days later same again making all the right clicks but drum not turning.
Any ideas? :rolls:

Did you fit those cheap and nasty ‘carbon brushes with tails’ I wonder?

Errr yes, because I cant see how i could make anything else fit? The ones with springs on the wires wouldnt do the job because the springs would get in the way and theres the two spiral springs built into the Brush mounting plate? So yes its the tails with clips.
Just taken it to bits and reassembled, commutator was very carboned up but still doesn’t work after reassembly, I’m now suspecting the contacts into the windings block because I’ve had trouble with that before!March 12, 2013 at 8:41 pm #391882Martin

Or the embedded TOC in the brush ring has blown? Those brushes are crap and overheating has caused the problem I reckon. Proper job would be to replace the motor end housing but that costs 10 times the price. But even with spare parts you only get what you pay for. 😉

Sorry – the TOC? is that a capacitor? Could I just retain the end casting and replace the brush holder unit itself? Thanks for the help by the way.
The machine appears to be ok again after reassembly this time, must have bent a contact out of alignment – they seem so flimsy for the job?March 12, 2013 at 9:39 pm #391884Martin

No, thermal overload cut-out

No, the whole end housing includes a new style brush ring unit (see HERE)
