This one has been banging and walking around a bit and the suspension feels weak. So I peeped underneath and saw those two cheap-looking square-ish profile shocks and gave my customer a reasonably confident off-the-top-of-my-head estimate of £35 / pair max. for those plus labour. :rolls: I should have known better by now.
I did notice it was a clip-together type split tub and told customer I wasn’t too sure how the shocks would come off so gave a high max. estimate for labour and left with their instruction to go-ahead.
So first of all, by the ubiquitous web presence of 448032 at £40 to £50 ea. I take it this is a common problem and the square ones do have a limited lifespan. ❓
Still the square ones have lasted 8 years for this pensioner couple so what’s the point of upgrading if another cheap set like it will get them through to the machine’s 16th birthday or so?
Connect’s version for this model are described as 90N so if I got a similar spec. damper such as the 100N Lux square ones for LAV645 etc. which have a 10mm hole and are about £5 each – could I fit them by a bit of fettling – even if it meant splitting the tub?

You have to drill out the moulded pivot pin on the tub mount with a 12mm drill (IIRC!) and fit the bolts provided.

Or……you could just fit Hotpoint WMA dampers as they are the same size and shape. Use the bolt mount at the bottom and the nylon pins at the top. A friend of mine did it on a recon Bosch and it all worked fine.

Thanks Steve, I thought there would be someone who had already been there so I’m glad to get your reply.
I presume your friend would have used the original square type dampers rather than the newer round ones as usually supplied now.
Customer has left msg on answerphone this am asking for a “quote” for job. Has Matt Allright been on the telly again spreading the truth about me?
Looked on ebay as that’s often where I get parts these days and was surprised to find that dozens of trade sellers are trying to flog second hand HPT suspas, some even describing them as, “seller refurbished”. “We have a workshop full of trained engineers fitting these to actual machines to test them fully… etc. ” :rotfl:
Maybe that’s how some employers are keeping their engineers busy during the recession?

Have just rung customer back and explained situation and she wants to go with having the genuine Bosch ones :rolls: preferring to pay double and talking about “penny-wise, pound foolish.” Customer’s always right of course so I didn’t argue.
Sometimes I wonder why I bother trying to save people money though. In future I’ll spend more time psychoanalysing the customer and save myself the bother of trying to fix machines at a realistic price when that’s not what they want.

    Well done her. 😀

Bodging in Merloni secondhand eBay junk not best suited to this machine after all said and done eh? 😉

Martin, sometimes you don’t take enough time to read posts properly before jumping in. I never said I would use s/h parts for this job. It would never make sense to use s/h dampers unless you had taken them from a machine yourself which you knew to be little-used or nearly new. I only happened on the Ebay ones whilst searching for new ones on there and mentioned it in passing. They’re mostly looking for prices above what we can buy them new anyway!
OTOH, I would certainly have preferred to use Merloni new parts at a quarter of the price when the machine has already done 8 years on similar spec. parts. Customer is going to pay me about £90 for two legs and they could have had as good for about £25.

I know that Mike and never implied that you did either as it happens….peace brother! 🙂
