    Hello,

Asked you before and received professional and spot on reply (email’s gone, forgot the password, hence a new account), would appreciate any input on the following:

Bosch WKD28350GB used twice a week at most, drying no more than twice a month.

So far I had the door lock and a front panel replaced within warranty (5 years). Also the plastic drum ribs, as they were detaching themselves randomly every time 2 or more heavy bath towels were in the wash. Bosch engineer affecting repairs commented that it was one of “those” units manufactured in a wrong factory/country/whatever.

Now it makes a loud clanking noise every turn of the drum and the drum itself is extremely hard to turn by hand. It still works (I don’t know how the motor manages it) and no error codes are displayed. So I assume the drum bearings are gone (outside of warranty as prescribed), and looking forward to a horrible screeching during use. My question – is it economical to repair? I’m quite satisfied with performance of the machine, the results are far better than any of my friends/relatives appliances (some way more overpriced), although it may be because I’m not overdoing it with a detergent… 🙂

    TIA.

Sounds like the drum spider has broken – you will notice this as the drum will turn “off centre” to the door gasket edge and jam. If this is the case, then the drum and spider is only supplied as one assembly and is £230 in a box from Bosch. Drum change is not a job for the faint hearted – requires complete strip and rebuild of the machine and its viability will depend on the condition of the outer tub (is it scored or damaged in any way). If the drum turns concentrically, then there is probably a foreign body between the tub and drum. This could also cause the drum paddles to detach…… 😉
The final problem is bearing failure. Most failures will happen over several weeks or months until you get a noise akin to a helicopter in your kitchen but if you have left it that long then the bearings may well have seized and will require the spider change as well (see above).
You are strongly advised to seek the help of an engineer who will be able to ascertain exactly which fault you have. The Bosch is not a bad machine; they are just not as good as they were. But a shame to throw it out without knowing for sure……

    Thank you for your reply…

The drum tunrs straight and no issues with an excessive noise overall. No vibration when draining. Steady loud “clank” every 360` drum turn by motor. (no noise if done by hand, but quite/very hard at least 1/3rd of the way, then eases). No foreign objects in as far as I can tell. Drum wobbles/moves around freely/as it was, only turning is affected. £200-ish is an acceptable price to repair it due to machine’s price. How can I make sure this is indeed a bearing? Upload an audio?
