This has started making horrible “rubbing/grinding” noises. I suspect the drum bearings are shot.

I took the top off to ‘have a look’ and wasn’t sure about taking the back off. Tipping the machine seems to have temporaritly improved things a bit, but

    1. Should I consider this repairable. Sounds expensive/perhaps a false economy to try and repair this fairly old machine.

    2. There are a lot of screws holding the back panel on. Looks like it’s not only attached to the machine’s frame on the sides, but also to the rear drum bearing/frame. Is it safe to ‘unscrew the lot’ to get the back off to have a look at the state of the rear drum bearing, or does this model normally fail at the front (if I recall with plastic ball bearings round the front edge of the drum wich fail eventually?)?

Any advice to getting this sorted would be gratefully received.

Rear shaft/bearing, belt tension pulley, front drum bearing pads, ripped up tub seal, something trapped, or motor bearings can all make noises.

    Power off if investigating.

Dismantling a dryer such as this is not a complicated procedure. Obviously each and every screw, washer, bracket, pulley, fan, heater plate etc etc will need systematic attention to ensure the reverse is applied when re-assembling. 😉

    Sure.

Just trying to avoid that sinking feeling of something dropping down inside as I remove some screws on the outside – and wondering how to align everything back up to reassemble it!

I guess a dryer isn’t likely to be like that though…
