ParticipantI need some advice from an experienced forum member regarding a Bosch tumble dryer – WTA2000/GB .
When the machine is in normal operation there is a knock/cluncking noise as the drum turns. I suspect that the bearings are at the end of their useful life, as turning the drum by hand seems to indicate that the clunk sounds at one particular position.
Since I can’t find a technical manual on the web, just a parts list on the Bosch site, I want to make sure that this is the root problem before I order the parts at £35 (part #039476). I also want to know if this repair is one I could carry out myself or one I should leave to an engineer (with specialist tools). Is there an engineer in the KY11 post code area?
BTW Anyone know of a cheaper OEM part?
Thanks in advance.November 4, 2006 at 5:42 pm #194293Penguin45

Before buying anything, open the door and look at the back of the drum. You should see three rivets in the centre back. This is where the drum support attaches. The rivets work loose, generating lots of noise. If left, they will actually rip up the back of the drum, meaning complete replacement.
Power off before pulling apart, please. For professional help, click the link below and put your postcode in there for a local UKW engineer.

Penguin45.Thanks for the tip Penguin45. Well the rivets appear to be fine, no excessive play, as far as I can tell. (I would have expected just one to be loose to give a knocking noise once every revolution). Ah well back to the drawing board – anyone else have any suggestions?

Broken arm on the support will knock rhythmically. Drive belt with missing/badly worn section of track will do it as well.

I’ve just been inside the back of my WTA2000 to replace the element. Whilst in there I noticed I also have the problem with loose rivets mentioned earlier in this thread, so the drum rattles around & has worn away the holes in 2 of the tripod legs. My question now is – can this be repaired economically (e.g. bolts with locking nuts), or am I better off scrapping the unit & buying another? The only price I have found for a new drum so far is over £200!

If the rivets are slightly loose, they can be drilled out and replaced with M6 nuts and bolts. Be warned that getting the hub dead central is critical to quiet running.

Thanks Penguin45. I am sorry to say that 2 of the 3 rivets can only be described as VERY loose. The holes in the relevant 2 drum support legs have become very elongated. Since I have now paid for & fitted a new heating element, I might as well have a go at trying the nuts & bolts, and run it into the ground, then the wife can have a nice shiny new one when it finally dies.

Well, I have now also replaced the broken thermostat that I found when replacing the heating element, & whilst I was in there drilled out the 2 loosest rivets & replaced with M6 bolts as suggested by Penguin45.
RESULT!!! 😀
Even the wife now agrees that it is MUCH quieter, even with the dryer balls bouncing round inside.
Thanks again Penguin45. Pint?

I have similar problem … drum turns ok, but no heat … tried the reset button but no joy, so I assume it must be the thermostat or the element. Would appreciate some details on how they can be replaced … thanks
