Yesterday I took delivery of a Bosch WTV74309GB venting dryer as a replacement for a Bosch WTA2000. I had paid a fee for the dryer to be installed. It became apparent that the van driver and assistant were pretty clueless and were not familiar with the model. They decided that the exhaust air duct was too long and would not allow the dryer to be pushed back into the space under the worktop. One of them wanted to cut the duct but the other one didn’t agree, and I would have stopped them doing that anyway as It didn’t sound like something that should be necessary. The dryer is currently protruding some 8 inches into the room, with the duct leaving the machine from the back lower left, leading right across the machine before turning back on itself and being connected to the vent through the outside wall.

I can find nothing in the installation instructions regarding the length of the duct, other than the necessity to keep pressure losses down by avoiding bends and so forth. There is certainly nothing about cutting it if it is too long.

Our situation of having the wall vent directly behind the dryer outlet cannot be unusual. Should we ‘concertina’ the duct down to the length to run in a straight line between the dryer and the wall vent? Or is there something else that we need to do?

    I’d have cut it.

The shorter the run the better usually.

    Thanks.

I cannot look at the duct until my husband is here and we can move the dryer between us, so I have no idea of the fittings at either end. Please could you suggest which end we cut and explain what we would do about reattaching the fittings?

Presumably some of the duct will have to be ‘concertinaed’ because of the access issues(a cupboard on the left, and an end panel on the right)? Just not the 2m that it is now.

    Depends on the installation TBH.

If the outlet on the dryer doesn’t line up with the hole in the wall and allow “reasonable” airflow out the tumble dryer then you could have problems.

For example, if the duct out on the dryer is at the other side from the hole in the wall then it’s an issue if you see what I mean. But, even if the hose has to be crushed or bent then it equally can be an issue.

Without seeing where the hole in the wall is in relation to the outlet on the dryer it’s difficult to advise accordingly.

Normally however it’s just bog standard vent hose that’s used and easily manipulated or cut.

The concertina vent hose can and should be cut to its most convenient length, the shorter the better. Either end can be shortened and reattached to the fixing collar. (The collars are screw threaded on by the way) Sometimes a degree of compromise is required regarding its length in relation to how convenient it is to manoeuvre in and out should access to the back be required.

One of the greater issues with vented dryers is marrying the vent hose to the outside wall vent. In thousands of cases I have come across, many are simply bodged to fit with gaffer tape, string and all manner of sticking plasters and wire. The ideal being a cavity wall vent specifically suited for the concertina hose and its collar to simply push fit into the vent outlet without the need for glue and sticky tape!

Once connected and in place, put the dryer on the cool setting briefly and check the airflow outside. Those outside wall slatted vents should lift up allowing a fair blast of air to exhaust. Once installed and working properly do check and clean the fluff/lint filter after every load and once a month check to see if the outside vent is clear and un obstructed. HTH? 😀

    Thank you, both.

We have solid brick walls, and the vent, which was installed by a professional, is directly opposite the dryer outlet, so that should be OK.

I think that between you I have the confidence for us to tackle cutting the concertina hose now. Thanks again.

Brilliant in fact! The ideal scenario, but makes one wonder how come the installers had an issue with that…….unless of course you got it from Currys “Knownowt” that is ???

Easy way to check on the hose is to go outside remove the grill and put your hand in go check the hose is connected and not kinked, you can also gather the hose together neater. When happy put he grill back on.

Well, we have done it following the help generously given here.

The hose was just pushed into the wall vent, and we found a plastic bag left inside it 😯

We didn’t buy from Currys, but the chain of independents beginning with ‘E’. There is a branch down the road and we have bought all of our big appliances there for years. I am disabled and have more problems than usual at present, so couldn’t walk down there and my husband couldn’t take time off work. We bought direct from the website because of the current wet weather and proximity to Christmas. Lesson learned is not to do that again 🙁 I am going to send them some feedback once I have decided how to word it.
