ParticipantBOSCH WVTI 2842 GB Washer Dryer : Experienced failure with code E06 being displayed. Web search indicated this could be caused by blockage in drain system. Checked hoses, pump operation & filter no problems found. Turned Washing Machine over on its left side, opened the bottom cover plate and by pressing on Washing Machine Sump Hose checked for any foreign items. Felt something at the large end of this hose where it is attached to the drum. Removed the hose connection at the drain pump end and took a peek in (downwards towards the large end) with a torch and saw what seemed like a plug near that end had come loose from somewhere. It was too big to be a foreign object. Proved too inconvenient to remove the clasp torque screw at the large end of the sump hose so instead turned the Washing Machine over on to itโs right side hoping that this loose item would then fall downwards towards the drain pump end of this hose and could then be removed. However it did not fall down. Taking a peek in upwards with a torch showed that this plug like item no longer seemed loose as it had now positioned itself into the large opening at the drum end connection of the sump hose. Restored all connections and tested washing machine and found that it was now working okay. But as no blockage was found am now not sure if the failure condition will reoccur soon. Searched through on forums but could not find an answer to above issue.
My query is: what is this plug like item inside the large end connection of the Sump Hose. Could it be a component that should be tightened into place or should it remain loose as indicated above.
Would appreciate any kind advice on the above query, thank you.December 7, 2015 at 5:12 pm #433475melec

What you’ll find is that ‘plug’ is a non-return device actually it’s a plastic ball !!
It prevents backwash say from the sink for example entering the appliance
Clearly if your machine is plumbed in independantly to a standpipe e.g then this non-return is not required
I personally always take them out and dispose if I am cleaning the sump hose!
They can get punctured then fill with water and cause a blockage so I see it as preventative maintenance ( you literally prise it out size of a large ping pong ball!!)
I just think that it blocks too much of the flow and lends itself to blockages
But you may feel like it’s a good thing to leave it there !!
If you take the sump hose off it will be obvious what it is inside and then you can make a call on whether it is causing a problem???December 7, 2015 at 6:07 pm #433476Martin

That is incorrect. It’s purpose is to close the sump to prevent detergent getting flushed into the sump hose as the machine fills. Nothing whatsoever to do with drain hose backwash.
The sump ball valve is a very necessary device and I would not recommend its removal (other than to clean it and put back).

Thanks Martin
Shows how wrong you can be !! My circle of Engineers knew not of it’s purpose either so appreciate the feedback
I do not think that it is fitted on all models though, in fact I find more models without them than with?
Do you know why ?December 7, 2015 at 9:28 pm #433478Martin

You’ll need to enlighten me on that. I’m only aware of Nexus series Zanussi’s by virtue of the fact the sump hose was on the side. All makes and models with sump hoses at the bottom (6o’clock position) have ball valves to my knowledge. Unless some muppet has removed it previously that is. ๐

That is highly possible haha !!
I have searched the history of this detergent sump ball back through the sites’ posts and it seems to have caught a few people out ?
I will now start paying attention to what models etc it is fitted to just for my brainbank
I deal mostly with Bosch but I am starting to doubt my memory as to whether all or just some models have them now ??? Always happy to be learn something new ! More knowledge, more power = Higher service charge !!!!December 9, 2015 at 7:19 pm #433480km321

Hi folks, greatly appreciate your quick responses on my query.
So it seems I should leave this ball valve well alone. Fortunately the washing machine is working okay at the moment so all is well for now.
Many thanks & have a joyful day. -
