Looking at detergent ingredients on the packaging they appear to all be virtually the same. Is buying a branded detergent such as Bold better than an own brand detergent e.g. Sainsbury’s? How do own brands compare I don’t mean value but just the general generic store brand.

Generally speaking, it’s to do with the quality of the ingredients as well as the quantity especially so the expensive ones. The cheap brands cut back on those but still use them, hence cheaper.

Some time back Which? tested several leading brands against the far cheaper own brands with very surprising results.

So would using a cheaper brand do any damage to my machine? I know the Which report rated Aldi Almat above Ariel once or twice. What about Ecover Delicate for Wool and Silk?

I’ve not used it but yes, the Aldi stuff is reported to be good.

    Ariel is good.

Ecover I don’t rate. Never found it to have decent performance.

Aldi detergent ok but beware can froth up badly due to a higher {e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of zeolite compared to others.

The Lidl equivalent ‘Formil’ is also an excellent product. The big advantage these German supermarket ‘own brands’ have over the leading brands is no requirement to advertise. Hence the contents of the product are of high quality yet the price is incredibly low. Proving that cheap doesn’t necessarily mean nasty.

As I posted earlier, Which? Tested these products ad gave them a good overall rating. Only a fully independent testing centre like them can offer a credible unbiased view worthy of note.
