Hello everybody and congratulations for the wonderful site!

I have a Brandt BF58 washing machine. If BF58 does not say anything to you, it is an EU model (220Vac, 50Hz).
My washer is making a strange noise during low RPM operation. I call this noise strange because it reminds me of the noise of a 3phase motor during starting with a phase cut-off, but it’s very loud. You can hear this noise at the exact moment of the transition from low to high rpm at http://www.savefile.com/files/8280658
I have checked the suspension springs, the dampers, the drive belt, the huge concrete mass which is mounted on top of the drum, the motor and the drum bearings, and the water pump. Drum and motor rotation by hand is easy and noiseless. Everything is OK. Noise excluded, the washer is fine too.
I have operated the washer with the driver belt removed (motor off-load) but the noise level was the same.
Apparently, something is going wrong with either the motor or the power supply-speed control circuits.
On the motor, there is a placard saying SELNI, 330 rpm, 2850 rpm, etc.
I’m going to check the motor tomorrow, but I don’t think this is going to help because the motor is noiseless during high speed operation.
Every piece of information before I start to disassemble my loved washing machine is welcome.

    Thanks in advance

That noise sounds like one of the low speed field windings is shorting to me.

It may also be worth checking the capacitor 😉

Thanks for your quick reply, Dave.

I got the motor checked by a motor rewind mechanic. He ran the motor on the bench off-load and the noise during low speed operation was heard, but not as loudly as previously. I hope the difference in the noise level is just a matter of where the motor is mounted on.
The funny thing is that the noise almost vanished when the motor was held in vertical position. If I knew it I would change the washer’s orientation… 😆
    The motor needs a rewind: cost 55 €. 😀
    A brand new motor costs 250 € (170.58 £). 👿

    Best regards, Kostas.
