ParticipantWe bought a new Brandt fridge freezer, CBF360WU, from Comet in January 2002. In December the unit stopped working and it was still under guarantee, just!
It took about a week to get an engineer out and a further week to get a new control module which took about two minutes to fit. The total cost of the repair was £106.00 covered under the guarantee. We seem to have the same problem again. There is a melting plastic smell coming from the unit and neither the fridge nor the freezer are cooling.
Should I simply order up the part myself and replace it? We still have the old part and the invoice for the repair with all the details. If I go this route I can probably order a part tomorrow and have it here and fited for Tuesday morning at a fraction of the cost with no callout charges.
Is this a common problem for this make, where a control module only lasts about one year, or have we just been unlucky, twice!?
Any advice would be appreciated.

hi kizzy
Its a sad fact that electronics can take us to mars and not last the 12month guarantee period out for an appliance. The reason is usually down to cost and by that I mean the unit production cost, not the retail cost. However, if your appliance is totally quiet and the condensor on the back(the black grill) is not warm at all then ok the PCB might be faulty and replacing it will get you going.
Its worth noting that an old fashioned thermostat can be purhased and fitted for a fraction of the cost of replacing PCB’s every month or so when you throw this junk away and go back to basics and buy a NOT frost free appliance.
Sigh…oh for the good old days of defrosting your freezer every 6 to 8 months…..

’tis true the pcb control units are problematic to say the least.
I’ll let you know the price of the part in the morning Kizzy, although you may want to consider kheath’s advice and replace the whole appliance.

No problem 😀
The price for the PCB will be £67.45 inc VAT and postage.
If you want one ordered, let me know, I can sort that out for you, Brandt normally take 3-5 working days for parts to arrive.
