Britannia si-10t6 ls intermittantly not heating

Hi,

We have a 2004 Britannia si-10t6 ls range cooker that has developed an intermittant fault that I’m hoping someone could point me in the right direction so I can start troubleshooting.

Over the past couple of months, we’ve noticed that occasionally, the main oven will heat up for a few minutes before the elements seem to switch off. The green light is still on so you don’t notice there’s a problem until you open the door and realise the oven is not very warm. It’s done this when both the oven and grill functions are used so I don’t think it’s one function in particular that’s causing it and it can run fine for weeks sometimes without a problem.

The main oven selector switch was a bit “notchy” a while ago but seems OK now – could a selector switch cause the problems I’m having or is it more likely a thermostat / element issue?

I’d really need the ART number on the rating plate to be sure of much but, that sounds more like the cooling fan is not working or the overheat stat is being tripped for some reason.

Is that the AR1303 or something else? I did wonder about the cooling fan but it does appear to be working. After it failed to heat yesterday, I turned the grill off and back on again an turned the temp up to 200. The grill heated up fine and I could hear the cooling fan kick in.

When the wife told me it was playing up yesterday, the temperature was only at about 50 so probable not even hot enough for the fan to kick in.

When they cut out like that the cooling fan and stats are the first thing to look at usually.

The switch is possible but less likely as that’s more or an “it works, doesn’t work” kinda thing, there’s no middle ground.

OK, thanks for that. On a cooker this age, is it worth spending money on parts to try and fix it? Is the cooling fan and stat easily accessible if I were to have a go at fixing it?

The cooker’s been reliable over the last 20 years so happy to spend a bit of money to try and keep it going as it seems newer range cookers don’t seem to be great quality unless you spend fortune on them.

Yeah it’s an easy enough thing to do once you work out what the problem is and parts for them aren’t that bad price wise. It’s also not that hard to get into, getting access to the rear and sides is normally the biggest problem but once you get that it’s not that hard.
